This is the terrifying moment a brazen driver makes an illegal turn and drives the wrong way down aGatesheadroad.

Dashcam footage of the shocking incident was captured at the junction of Durham Road and Prince Consort Road on Tuesday afternoon.

The video shows the driver of the grey Vauxhall cross the dual carriageway to make the illegal right turn.

The motorist then drives on the wrong side of Prince Consort Road through the traffic lights.

The driver of the car who filmed the incident, who wishes to remain anonymous, was parked at the junction at 3.15pm when they spotted the reckless driver.

Describing the events that followed, they said: "I saw the driver stick their nose out and look before just going for it.

"Durham Road is one of the busiest in Gateshead. They realised they were not supposed to turn right but have gone for it anyway.

"I could not tell if it was a man or woman driving, but they were just laughing as they went past.

"That's the worst driving I've seen since I got the dashcam."

ANorthumbria Policespokesman said: "Although this incident has not been reported to police it clearly could have put other road users in danger.

"Motorists should respect road signs and not attempt to take short cuts in a bid to get to their destination.

"If you are running late or have made a wrong turn then remain patient and follow the road.

"Our traffic officers do not want to be called to the scene of a serious collision so our message is simple - don't take unnecessary risks that put you, or other road users, in danger."
