The Tanakh books of Haggai and Zechariah 1-8 reflect the period just after the end of the Babylonian Captivity and the return to Israel. Therefore they mark a period of transition for the Hebrew people and a need to recover lost tradition. Boda (theology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario) and Floyd (El Centro de Estudios Teologicos, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic) present a group of essays on how these prophetic books draw on traditional themes, motifs and forms. A panel of four other experts on these prophets the respond to the essays. This method of giving a variety of opinions based on solid research and allowing for discussion is in the best rabbinic tradition.
