RiME PC, XBOX ONE, PS4, SWITCH.
RIME is the cover song destined to become as beloved as the original.
Its enigmatic atmosphere, flowingcaped hero and melancholic, abandoned environment of dynamic puzzles and grand, ancient architecture is so obviously lifted directly from PS2's Ico. But RiME's own personality quickly shines.
The emphasis on light and bright pairs brilliantly with cel-shaded visuals to create an inviting sense of place that prevents the linear structure of each level becoming dull.
The emerging mystery ushers in ghostly shapes, Pompeii-like petrified figures and an elusive red caped somebody, capping RiME's otherwise friendly nature with a nicely spooky, Don't Look Now style vibe.
RiME is kind, too, especially if you pay attention. Subtle cues for later puzzles are well blended into your voyage of discovery and dying is only ever a momentary setback.
There is a lack of tension, but overall the result is a dreamlike and engaging adventure.
