Redford's echoes of history.
THE CONSPIRATOR***
12
ROBERT Redford in the director's chair delivers a solid, if tubthumping, courtroom drama exploring a littleknown chapter of US history.
... Crucible... After the shooting of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, the mother of one of the alleged THIS plotters (played by Robin Wright) is charged with being an accomplice.
With the military court determined to see her swing, all that stands between her and the gallows is James McAvoy's plucky lawyer.
Also starring Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson and Toby Kebbell, The Conspirator delivers messages about the perils of trampling civil rights in times of national crisis, scaring up comparisons with 9/11 and Guantanamo.
Thing is, the message is rammed home a little too often. Still, there's nowt wrong with the performances and a reasonable script should keep you watching until the end.
