Pay mums to stay at home, says Winning.

THE leader of Scotland's 750,000 Catholics says young mothers should be paid to stay at home rather than forced out to work.

Cardinal Thomas Winning, who has been a fierce critic of Tony Blair, was responding to the Government's proposals for families unveiled earlier this week.

The churchman says most people would prefer it if young mothers were paid to look after their children at home.

Cardinal Winning added: "The conspiracy to present working mothers as happy high-earners must ring hollow with the many mothers emptying parking meters and stuffing giblets into frozen chickens in a desperate bid to keep their families together."

He says the Government could learn from a scheme in Norway where all young mothers are paid pounds 4000 for their first year at home after giving birth.

The cardinal also urges more support for couples and their children, including restoring the married person's tax allowance.

He said: "While I do not suggest that cash aid will keep marriages healthy, it remains true that financial problems are at the root of many a divorce."
