Police carried out a controlled explosion inClaygateon Sunday morning (November 18) after an unexploded bomb was found in a shed.

A cordon was put in place around a house near the junction of Coverts Road and Fee Farm Road after a resident found the device.

A witness said they had seen houses and cars cordoned off when they passed the area at 9.20am.

Officers then carried out the controlled explosion and, at 11.30am, a police spokesman said: "The device has been examined and declared safe, and the cordon has now been lifted."

This is the third time in two months that bomb disposal experts have been called to the area.

On September 16, officersremoved two mortar shells, believed to date from the First World War, from Esher Common.

A week later, police received reports of another device at the junction of Milbourne Lane and Copsem Lane. However, thisturned out to be part of an old lamppost.
