Collecting: What do they mean?

These are the two new postage stamps which are being issued by Royal Mail on Tuesday to commemorate 100 years of the Entente Cordiale agreement between England and France. The French are issuing their own version, leaving off, of course, the Queen's head and altering the values to euros -but keeping identical main designs.

When questioned about the relevance of the design during a London press conference launching the stamps Royal Mail senior officials could only say: 'It is modern art.'

Can any reader, I wonder, let us know what the designs are meant to imply in the context of conveying 100 years of Anglo-French 'Entente Cordiale'? Letters to the editor would be welcome
