BETTER LAT THAN NEVER.

PAUL SCHARNER has warned title-chasing Chelsea that Wigan are no longer a soft touch for the Premier League's big four.

The Latics were beaten 20 times in a row by the top teams after arriving in the big league in 2005, but the rot stopped when Steve Bruce arrived in November. The new boss has instilled more fight in his troops and has seen them hold Arsenal and Liverpool to draws in his only league encounters with the top four clubs.

Midfielder Scharner said: "We have struggled against the big teams and I think that is because of a lack of belief. But when Steve came here he told us we can stop the run, and it worked.

"I expected more this season, but the Premier League is one of the hardest in the world and it is difficult to get established. We are on our way now and have to look ahead 10 years. Maybe Wigan will fight for a European Cup then."
