Arcano tops Guineas betting after Prix Morny win.

Byline: CHRIS WRIGHT

ARCANO is the new favourite for next season's Stan James 2,000 Guineas after beating Canford Cliffs in a courserecord victory in the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville yesterday.

Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum bought Arcano after his July Stakes success, and Brian Meehan got off the mark for his new owner in fine style. The owner's retained jockey Richard Hills was tracking odds-on favourite Canford Cliffs in the early part of the race, before powering past the Coventry Stakes winner and winning by short neck to Special Duty.

Richard Hannon's Canford Cliffs was a neck away in third.

Arcano is generally an 8-1 chance with most firms for next year's Newmarket Classic, with Ladbrokes 12-1 the best on offer.

Meehan, who won the Prix Morny nine years ago with Bad As I Wanna Be, said: "I'm so pleased to win for my new owner. It's marvellous to do the job for him. I've only been training for him for a few weeks - his whole team have been fantastic.

"My horse is still a baby and there is masses of improvement still to come.

"He's entitled to be Guineas favourite now and getting a mile will not be an issue."

Angus Gold, racing manager for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, added: "Full credit to Brian Meehan and his team at Manton - they take all of the credit for this.

"Martin Dwyer, Brian and all of the team have always thought he wants seven furlongs. Richard said he was babyish during the race, was caught flat-footed and won the race by staying."

Arcano is expected to run once more in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket before the end of the season.

Gold added: "I imagine Sheikh Hamdan would love to see him win the Dewhurst.

"It's great to see him win a Group One over six furlongs."
