AT THE HEART OF EUROPE.

On 21 March, the TV channel Arte will have an evening dedicated to Europe. The main element of the evening will be a documentary by Sergio Ghizzardi, which leads the viewer to the heart of Europe' with Peter Mandelson, Jose Manuel Barroso, Tony Blair and Martin Schulz. Textile quotas, the Services Directive, the Dutch and French no' votes in the referendum are all there, but the gestures and the hesitations often speak louder than words. It is the Chinese minister who asks Peter Mandelson in a conspiratory tone at the end of negotiations "perhaps I shouldn't smile, it'll make your job easier," or Martin Schulz, the leader of the EPP-ED Group, who after negotiations on the Services Directive remarks "I told him that (Hans-Gert Pottering) wouldn't get a majority, I was bluffing," or Barroso convincing the liberals to vote on the Services Directive as "you're not going to vote with the communists".
