ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH COUNCIL TAX? www.coventry.gov.uk.
Q. Help! My father is struggling to pay his Council Tax. He has dementia and it has started to affect his ability to deal with his finances. I know he receives attendance alowance, but is there anything else that I can help him with to reduce his payments?
A. Don't despair. Council Tax law does allow discounts and possible exemption if a person has a permanent mental health condition. It is very simple to apply for' a short form will need to be completed authorising the Council to obtain confirmation from his doctor to support the application. The applicant must also have certain disability benefits in payment, for example Incapacity Benefit or Attendance Allowance. If the application is successful, your father would be exempted from the charge if he lives alone, or a discount could be possible if there is someone else living with him.
