According to the latest FAO data, hunger is on the rise in almost all parts of Africa, and the continent has the highest prevalence of undernourishment in the world, at almost 20 percent.

SINGAPORE, July 16, 2019 - (ACN Newswire) - With the release of the 2019 State of Food Security & Nutrition in the World by the United Nations (UN), new data has come to light indicating hunger, undernourishment and obesity are at critical levels globally and throughout Asia in particular.

The report, launched on Monday on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum, the main UN platform monitoring follow-up on states' actions on the Sustainable Development Goals, shows that hunger has risen almost 20 percent in Africa's subregions, areas which also have the greatest prevalence of undernourishment.

Despite expectations of the increase in agricultural production, the data presented shows an overall decline in undernourishment in the world "would remain far off track from reaching the Zero Hunger target by 2030." The report also included the need for all governments to support open and transparent agricultural food markets, stressing the role of critical trade for world food security.

At the same time, the number of severely food-insecure Kenyans facing serious constraints on their ability to obtain safe, nutritious and sufficient food went up from 15 million in 2014 /2016 to more than 17 million in 2016/2017, also a 15 percentage-point increase.With an undernourishment rate of 24 percent, a slight improvement from 28 percent a decade ago, Kenya was the 24th most undernourished country in the world out of 167 surveyed and 18th out of 45 countries in Africa.

If undernourishment of livestock was addressed, malnutrition of people could be reduced to a great extent in Sindh.
