Eckardt C9 started with the 23-gauge TSV in 2005 which was based on the same surgical pr incipals as 2 5-gauge.8 In comparison with traditional 20-gauge vitrectomy surgery the 23-gauge technique has small incisions and self-sealing sclerotomy ports.
