According to a New York Times article, Lee Bollinger, president of
Columbia University, said that "grappling with the university's complicity' with slavery was necessary to address current injustice." Unlike Georgetown University, Columbia may not have owned slaves itself, but it appears to have profited from slavery-related fortunes in the era before New York passed a gradual-abolition law in 1799.
It was conceived as part of the University of Puerto Rico, but under the auspices of
Columbia University. The collaborative plan between the two institutions delegated powers to
Columbia University.
