World champions to have final word

Argentina are bidding for a third straight major tournament triumph, having won the Copa America in 2021 before lifting the World Cup in 2022.

They were given a scare in the 2024 Copa America quarter-finals as Ecuador’s Kevin Rodriguez scored a 92nd-minute equaliser to take the world champions to a penalty shootout.

Lionel Messi missed Argentina’s first spot-kick but goalkeeper Emi Martinez saved Ecuador’s first two efforts to set up this semi-final against Canada.

Rodriguez’s goal was the first that Argentina had conceded at the tournament after they had beaten Canada 2-0, Chile 1-0 and Peru 2-0 in their three group fixtures.

Another low-scoring win looks likely in the rematch with the Canadians, who also came through a quarter-final penalty shootout, beating Venezuela 4-3 after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Canada finished runners-up to Argentina in Group A despite scoring only once in three games. They beat Peru 1-0 thanks to a late goal from star forward Jonathan David and sealed their place in the knockout stage with a goalless draw against 10-man Chile.

Jesse Marsch’s men are unlikely to roll over in the semi-final in New Jersey but Argentina have the attacking class and defensive solidity to seal victory in a game featuring under 2.5 goals.

In-form Martinez can break deadlock

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez scored Argentina’s goal in the quarter-final against Ecuador but his namesake Lautaro Martinez is worth backing to break the deadlock in the semi-final.

The striker looks full of confidence after scoring 24 goals in 31 Serie A starts for Inter in 2023-24 and he claimed four of Argentina’s five goals in the group stage.

That tally included the opener against Peru and Chile as well as an 88th-minute goal to wrap up the points against Canada. Martinez, who struck three times at the 2021 Copa America, can rattle the Canadian defence again.

Mac Allister underpins bet builder

Argentina were seconds away from a fourth straight victory to nil before conceding in stoppage time against Ecuador, so backing one or both teams not to score is a solid bet against Canada.

The underdogs are likely to have plenty of defending to do and over 3.5 cards is the second selection for our semi-final bet builder.

Canada have been shown 10 yellow cards in four matches while their group-stage opponents Peru and Chile both had a player sent off against them.

Boost the bet builder odds by backing Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister to have an assist for Argentina.

He set up Julian Alvarez for the opening goal against Canada in Group A and his deft near-post flick-on was headed in by Lisandro Martinez in the quarter-final against Ecuador.

Argentina vs Canada tip 3: Bet builder – One or both teams not to score, over 3.5 cards and Alexis Mac Allister over 0.5 assists @ 16/1 with talkSPORT BET
