Be it in clothing, cars, or furniture, Italy is known worldwide for its achievements in design. As the birthplace of many important art movements, Italy continues to prove its importance within this world. Its furniture market is not an exception, and in 2020, the country registered a
of over 10.4 billion euros, making it the fifth largest furniture exporter worldwide.
In 2021, the Italian
furniture market was estimated to have a value of nearly 15.6 billion euros. Additionally,
retail trade sales of furnishing products increased significantly in 2021, reaching a monthly index of 148 in December 2021. Italy also has an important history in furniture manufacturing that continues to the present day, both in setting trends and sheer numbers. As an example, just in the
office and shop furniture manufacturing industry, there were over 2,000 companies operating in the country in 2019.
Furniture shopping
According to a survey conducted in December 2021, over 30 percent of Italian respondents signaled they
intended to purchase furniture within the next three months. According to a different survey, a
low price is of particular importance to 20 percent of Italians. And while 11 percent of the people responding to that same survey stated they had
bought furniture and household goods online in the previous year, only two percent had
returned online-bought products in this category.
Furniture companies and manufacturing
The most recent data about
employment in the furniture manufacturing industry in Italy, i.e., from 2019, shows just under 110,000 people were employed by the industry that year, representing a considerable decline in comparison to the figures from the beginning of that decade. Furthermore, it was estimated that roughly 12,300 people would be
employed in upholstered furniture manufacturing by 2021.
