Automotive production is one of the main pillars of Hungary’s manufacturing sector. In recent years, there has been a strong focus on innovation, as well as research and development in the automotive industry. The
Vehicle production
As of 2022, the
industrial production value of transport equipment totaled over 12 trillion forints. Even though after World War II Hungary became one of the most significant producers and exporters of buses in Europe, in recent years, the Hungarian automotive production sector's focus has shifted towards the assembly of foreign automotive brands. Regarding
motor vehicle manufacturing volume, 2020 and 2021 recorded a decrease in the number of vehicles produced. In 2022, figures increased again, however, they did not reach pre-pandemic levels.
There are four leading original transport equipment manufacturers operating in Hungary — namely Audi, Mercedes, Opel, and Suzuki. Of the aforementioned automotive companies,
Audi was the most successful in 2022 in terms of revenue. It was followed by another German automobile manufacturer,
Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing, with a revenue of 3.97 billion euros.
E-mobility
Hungary was one of the first Central and Eastern European countries to promote e-mobility. So far, there has been strong government support for the production and use of electric vehicles, both in terms of passenger cars, as well as commercial vehicles. As a result of the growing popularity of e-mobility, the number of vehicles registered under green license plates has followed an increasing trend in the country.
The Hungarian government also promoted an increase in
electric vehicle charging stations over the past period, their number totaling over 2.1 thousand in 2021.
When it comes to
the most popular electric car brands, Tesla ranked in first place in 2022, with nearly 600 cars sold.
