AMD Threadripper Workstations

Threadripper is AMD’s HEDT and workstation processor line, offering more cores, memory channels, and I/O than Ryzen CPUs with higher clock speeds than their EPYC server chips.

AMD’s Threadripper and Threadripper PRO processors offer very high core counts but with faster turbo boost speeds than the EPYC family – while also supporting many more PCI-Express lanes and memory channels than the mainstream Ryzen models. The latest Threadripper 7000 generation increases per-core performance and memory bandwidth even further, thanks to its use of AMD’s newer Zen 4 core architecture and DDR5 RAM.

AMD Threadripper 7000 Details

AMD returns to the high-end desktop workstation segment with their recently announced Threadripper 7000 series. Available in 24, 32, and 64-core models, these new processors hearken back to previous generations with their quad-channel memory controllers and numerous PCI-Express lanes. Alongside these new HEDT chips, the Threadripper PRO line is also updating to the 7000WX series. It utilizes the same technology, but increases the number of memory channels, PCIe lanes, and available cores.

In addition to splitting the Threadripper product line in two, this generation includes several advancements:

  • AMD Zen 4 chiplet architecture – the same underlying technology found in Ryzen 7000 and EPYC 4th Gen processors
  • DDR5 ECC Registered memory support – bringing increased overall memory bandwidth and eventually higher memory capacities
  • PCI-Express Gen 5 – providing increased bandwidth for expansion cards and PCIe-based storage
