You’re likely to come across Sorceress Sellen fairly early in Elden Ring, when you discover the basement below the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave. Her quest will take you all over the Lands Between, intersect with other characters like Witch-Hunter Jerren, and even reveal what to do with the silent chained-up figure at Witchbane Ruins.

When you’re ready to get started with Sellen, head to Waypoint Ruins.

Chapter 1: You’re a Wizard, Tarnished

Step 1: Defeat Mad Pumpkin Head

Down the stairs at Waypoint Ruins, you’ll find a boss named Mad Pumpkin Head. Tuned to be an early game boss, he shouldn’t give you too much trouble. If you need a bit of help, get the Spirit-Calling Bell by speaking with the witch who appears at the Church of Elleh at night after you get access to your horse. Once you get the bell, you can summon Spirit Ashes during boss fights by using them from your item bar. With help from the wolf pack spirit the witch provides, you should be able to kill Mad Pumpkin Head with relative ease.

Step 2: Enroll in the Sellen School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Through the door you’ll find Sorceress Sellen, who will invite you to become her pupil after some dialogue. Once you get the ability to purchase her sorceries, buy everything she offers to unlock some more dialogue.

You can’t do more with Sellen’s side quest until you’ve progressed way past Limgrave. Go ahead and beat Raya Lucaria — using our Academy of Raya Lucaria walkthrough — and reach the Altus Plateau before continuing.

Step 3: Find Azur

To progress Sellen’s quest further, you’ll need to encounter a strange sorcerer named Azur. You’ll find him on Mt. Gelmir, past the Hermit Village. Reaching this can be quite tricky, so we’ll lay out the easiest path to get there.

From the Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace on Altus Plateau, head north up the rocky slope until you reach the Wyndham Ruins. You might need to dodge or complete a Tibia Mariner fight up here if you haven’t already done it. On the western side of the ruins, you’ll find the Seethewater River site of grace at the mouth of a deep canyon. Follow this canyon north and then west and you’ll eventually find the Seethewater Terminus site of grace.

West of Seethewater Terminus is Fort Laiedd. There isn’t much to do there, so ride past it and head south to a large but shallow lava lake where you’ll be attacked by a Magma Wyrm boss. Continue on the path from there and you’ll eventually reach Hermit Village. Defeat Demi-Human Queen Maggie on the village’s north side, and then proceed just a bit further to find the Primeval Sorcerer Azur site of grace, and, nearby, the grace’s namesake.

Step 4: Return to Sellen

After meeting Azur and accepting the Comet Azur spell from him, you can finally return to Sellen and continue her quest. She’ll open up to you about her love of taboo glintstone sorcery, and she’ll ask you to help locate one of her teachers. She’ll give you the Sellian Sealbreaker key.

Step 5: Locate Master Lusat

Sellen doesn’t give you much to work with, beyond suggesting that Lusat may be hidden near Sellia, Town of Sorcery in eastern Caelid. To find him, you’ll need to make your way to the Sellia Hideaway dungeon. You can reach the dungeon’s entrance by completing the Sellia, Town of Sorcery puzzle if you want (check out our Millicent quest guide for a full walkthrough on that). Alternatively, you can jump down the spirit spring just west of Fort Faroth.

Either way, you’re seeking a rock wall that hides the dungeon’s illusory entrance. Look for the large tombstone guarded by a big sorcerer, with an item on a corpse at its base. Attack the cliff face just behind it to gain access to the dungeon. Past several more illusory walls, you’ll reach a room with several crystals forming walkways over a chasm; make your way downward and find a sorcerer guarding a tunnel, which leads to Lusat’s location.

Return to Sellen for more dialogue, and then prepare for another lengthy detour if you haven’t already defeated Starscourge Radahn.

Chapter 3: Restart the Stars

Step 6: Defeat General Radahn

If you haven’t done so already, head to Redmane Castle in southern Caelid and defeat Starscourge Radahn. Sellen will hint at this if you give her the Letter of Introduction from Seluvis at the Three Sisters. The mighty Radahn has stopped the stars dead in their tracks, and the fates of all sorcerers, even outcast ones, are tied to them.

Step 7: Speak with Witch-Hunter Jerren

Castle Redmane’s castellan, Jerren, is available for a chat in the throne room following your battle with his master, Radahn. Exhaust his dialogue then head back to Waypoint Ruins.

Step 8: Shelter Sellen’s soul (Witchbane Ruins)

Your teacher will ask you to meet her at Witchbane Ruins in southern Limgrave, on the Weeping Peninsula, where her real body is imprisoned. When you arrive, she’ll give you an item called Sellen’s Primal Glintstone, which she informs you is her literal essence.

If you reload the area, Jerren should appear in the basement. If he doesn’t, try traveling back to Redmane Castle and speaking with him again. Jerren will reveal that Sellen, your beloved teacher, is a mass murderer. According to him, “countless sorcerers fell to her hands.” He’ll also confess that he doesn’t believe she’s truly dead.

Let’s go prove him right and finish Sellen’s quest once and for all.

Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge

Step 9: Seluvis’ puppet

If you’ve explored around the Three Sisters, you may have already come across Seluvis’ creepy basement full of life-like “puppets.” If not, look for an illusory floor that hides a staircase in some ruins within eyesight of Ranni’s Rise.

Down the stairs and past yet another fake wall, you’ll find a body that resembles Sellen’s. Give it the Primal Glintstone and Sellen will awaken and thank you for reviving her.

This is also one of the steps for the Seluvis questline, where if you pop in after giving the potion to someone, you’ll receive a puppet of your own.

Step 10: Make your choice

The final leg of Sellen’s quest takes place within Raya Lucaria’s Grand Library. You’ll need to defeat Rennala to access it.

Travel there after reviving Sellen, and you’ll find two summon signs on the ground outside — one red and one gold. Using the gold sign will send you to help Sellen defeat Jerren, while interacting with the red sign will put you on the other side of the conflict.

There are two ways to go about this: You can do a gut check and decide on a personal level whether you’d rather side with your teacher and the pursuit of knowledge at any cost, or punish her for apparently murdering a ton of her colleagues. Or, you can coldly examine the loot you’ll get with each outcome and calculate what’s most valuable to you.

  • If you side with Sellen, you’ll get Jerren’s Eccentric Armor Set. Sellen will remain in the Grand Library, where she’ll give you the Glintstone Kris dagger and sell the Shard Spiral sorcery. You can pick up her Witch’s Glintstone Crown and learn the true price of Sellen’s obsession with forbidden sorcery when you reload the area. Lastly, you can revisit Azur and Lusat’s locations to get their outfits as well.
  • On the other hand, if you side with Jerren, you’ll get the Witch’s Glinstone Crown immediately, as well as Sellen’s Bell Bearing, which will allow you to buy the remainder of her spells from the Husk merchant in the Roundtable Hold. Now standing outside the Grand Library entrance, Jerren will give you an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone as thanks for your assistance. Following this interaction, you can kill him anyway for his armor set.

In other words, the loot is mostly the same. Siding with Jerren gets you the valuable upgrade stone, but you miss out on the glintstone dagger and Azur and Lusat’s armor sets.

No matter what you choose, you’ve now seen Sellen’s story through to its grim conclusion.
