Elden Ring has a massive arsenal of outlandish and fun weapons, and hiding inside the mountain are a few gems that are ridiculously strong. Among the best of those, especially early on, is the Moonveil Katana.

The Moonveil features many of the traditional benefits of other katanas, like quick swing speed and good bleed stats, with the added bonus of a fantastic Ash of War ability that deals massive damage, especially to bosses.

Here’s how to get the Moonveil Katana, as well as what else you should equip and upgrade to turn into a boss-killing Samurai mage.

How to get the Moonveil Katana

You can get the Moonveil by defeating Magma Wyrm, the final boss of the Gael Tunnel dungeon in Caelid. While the boss can be a little difficult, thanks in large part to his weird, tough-to-dodge run attack, he’s still killable very early on in the game, particularly if you have magic or a katana for the bleed effect.

Moonveil Katana stats

To wield the Moonveil you’ll need 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity, and 23 Intelligence. To get the most out of this weapon, you’ll need to pour a few upgrade points into Intelligence and Dexterity. Though most of your damage will come from the weapon’s Ash of War, you’ll want to upgrade either of these two stats so you aren’t completely defenseless if you run out of FP.

The most important aspect of the Moonveil is its weapon level, because that is what controls how much damage its Ash of War ability does. The Moonveil can be upgraded using Somber Smithing Stones.

Moonveil Katana Talismans

There are a few Talismans that are very helpful for the Moonveil build, especially because you’ll often be spamming the weapon’s Ash of War. Here are all the Talismans that pair well with Moonveil.

  • Carian Filigreed Crest — Lowers FP consumed by skills
  • Cerulean Amber Medallion — Raises maximum FP

  • Ancestral Spirit’s Horn — Restores FP upon defeating enemies
