There is no explanation in-game for how the player holds the various items in their inventory. New Vegas' weight system may never be as immersive as that of Tarkov or other survival games. Still, CIBS is an experiment implementing a lore-friendly simple backpack system so that it feels like its a part of the vanilla game.

The idea for CIBS came from many backpack mods already on the Nexus. While these mods are great, using these modded backpacks also raises the question. Why is the player the only one in the Mojave with a backpack? Some vanilla armors include small pouches or pockets, but nothing bigger than a duffle bag. This extends to NPCs who are part of a standing army, though soldiers have carried packs since Caesar's legions walked the Earth (the real one, not the LARPer). The Wasteland is full of merchants and wanderers traveling on foot. They might need something other than their prison wallet to carry food and ammunition in.

CIBS aims to use the beautiful existing models and integrate them into the game as armor items in a natural way. It does this by
  • Creating balanced items with consistent names, stats, and mechanics
  • Distributing items to NPCs, loot tables, and the worldspace
  • Allowing the player to change every aspect of the mod as they see fit; this includes stats, spawn chances, and leveled lists, and the condition system

Features

Integration

This mod should work with any mod. It works great with TTW, so you will see these in the Capital Wasteland.
  • Three backpacks with several unique variants. Each backpack has a price and effect set for balance and gameplay reasons.
  • Backpacks distributed to vanilla leveled lists completely using modern scripting methods. This means no conflicts. NPCs from mods like The Living Desert will have backpacks as well.
  • The mod distributes generic backpacks to wastelanders, mostly mercenaries and caravaneers. Rarer versions exist as loot, especially in pre-War areas and in the hands of named NPCs. They are placed in areas of interest, so the player has a decent chance of collecting every variety in a completionist playthrough.
  • Many notable factions in the game get their own backpack (thanks to Qwib making a beautiful model for each faction). Some faction backpacks have
unique stats to reflect their faction. Faction backpacks can be stolen from faction camps and looted from faction corpses. If you can score enough points to get into their safehouses, you’ll find them there as well.
  • A completely new condition system that can be changed. Getting shot in the torso will damage your backpack. All backpacks can be repaired, similar to other armors.
  • Support for B42 Descriptions aka Pip-Info if you are really into backpack lore.
  • New handmade icons for both the Caravan and Field backpack types.
  • Great compatibility with the holster system Armed to the Teeth Redux, although this is thanks to that mod more than anything. Fingers crossed for an NPC version.

If you want to add your own backpacks to CIBS, see the example plugin in the Miscellaneous section under Files

Customization

  • The spawn rates of each backpack, via INI.
  • The backpack condition system. The player can set a damage modifier or disable the entire system, via INI.

This mod no longer uses the JIP LN Script Runner functionality. It causes unavoidable bugs with the Object Effect when loading saves. Also, no one was writing .txt scripts for CIBS anyways.

Items Added:

There are three main "types" of backpacks.

Caravan Backpack and its color variants.

Field Backpack and its color variants. Also special variants:
  • NCR Rucksack
  • Brotherhood Rucksack
  • Followers Backpack
  • And more! Collect them throughout the Wasteland.

Duffle Bag and its color variants. Also special variant:
  • Legion Sarcina

And more can be added easily with your own .esp patch. They can be easily added to the Leveled Lists of CIBS for integration in to the game.

Installation

  • Install Canvas Backpacks Remade.
  • Make sure you have all prerequisites, including JIP LN NVSE and JohnnyGuitar NVSE. If you have Improved Console, make sure it is updated to the latest version.
  • Disable the QwibNewBackpacks.esp plugin unless you want duplicate items with different names and systems.
  • Install this mod using MO2.
  • You're done! Take a look at config or nvse folders for customization options.
