Description

Ammo pretty much breaks the economy of the vanilla game. For example, 9mm Rounds, a very common and quickly superseded round, have a value-to-weight ratio of almost 35, more than Cartons of Cigarettes and Radscorpion Poison Glands. You can easily get rich by picking up all the ammo you come across and selling the calibres you don't need.

This is a fix for those that want a harder economy, or some extra realism.

Features:
  • All non-rocket ammo is now valueless (i.e. not including Missiles, Mini-Nukes, and Rockets).
  • Instead of selling individual rounds, merchants now only sell new boxes of ammunition, such as a box of 50 9mm Rounds, or 100 5mm Rounds. The number displayed in square brackets ([]) next to each ammo box is the number of rounds it contains. When you leave the dialog menu after purchasing an ammo box, the rounds are automatically unpacked into your inventory.
  • Unlike the vanilla ammo boxes, the new ammo boxes appear in the AMMO category of a merchant's inventory, and the value and weight exactly matches the value and weight of the rounds they contain.
  • All ammo types are supported, including from other mods.
  • The ammo boxes have realistic capacities based on the size of real-world ammo boxes. For example, all pistol rounds are typically sold in boxes of 50 cartridges in real life. These real-world sizes are actually stated on the vanilla in-game boxes for many of the ammo types.
  • The vanilla MISC ammo boxes are automatically replaced with an appropriate number of the new ammo boxes.
  • Optionally, the entire Ammo Box mode of the mod can be disabled, and instead merchants will still sell individual rounds, but any ammo that the player has will still have no value.

Overall, this pairs nicely with Complex Vendors (also included in Misc Gameplay Merge). Mojave Arsenal also enhances ammo generally with better names and diverse loot; it's Low Condition Loot feature helps make the economy harder too. The same feature is also included in my item rarity mod, Famine.

Installation

This mod requires the following:

Standard installation procedure: add the file to your data folder and check in the game launcher or your mod manager of choice. Load wherever.

Customisation

Full instructions for customisation can be found in the included INI file. The options are:
  • Enable/Disable Ammo Box mode (enabled by default)
  • Enable/Disable single-clip ammo being included (disabled by default)
  • Enable/Disable swapping vanilla ammo boxes for new ammo boxes (enabled by default)
  • Enable/Disable realistic box sizes (enabled by default)

Uninstallation

This mod can be safety uninstalled at any time and will have no permanent effects on your game. Just delete the file and you're good to go. There may be a small change in the number of rounds carried by merchants, but this will remedy when their inventory refreshes.

Compatibility

All merchants and ammo from other mods are automatically supported. There should be no compatibility issues on this front.

If a mod adds an entirely new MISC ammo box (.44 Special is one that I've seen) or an entirely new type of ammo that isn't part of the vanilla ammo lists, there is a slight incompatibility with the features that swap MISC ammo boxes and assign realistic ammo box sizes. However, these can be remedied easily without a patch by following the instructions in the INI file.
