About this mod

Tired of your in-game monitors displaying useless 'Mech diagnostics? Install and watch these holovid GIFs, instead!

(Warning: It is dangerous to watch videos while driving a 'Mech. Distracted driving is illegal on all maps in Mechwarrior Online.)

Changelogs
This mod will replace the default monitor images with GIFs referencing multiple sources related to Mechwarrior Online.
  • All System Nominal: Stagger Fire #7, by Plexi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjKJW2D-vSU)
  • UrbanMech: Death Blossom, by PGI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inLK05VFIdY)
  • Macross Episode 32: "Broken Heart", by Studio Nue (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5fQbwmfqrc, timestamp 20:29)

Installation:
  • Unzip the downloaded file, which should extract z_HolovidMonitors.pak.
  • Move z_HolovidMonitors.pak inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\Game, or whereever your installation of Mechwarrior Online is, so long as it's inside ...\MechWarrior Online\Game.
  • Enjoy the holovids!

If you want to create a similar mod, then you must extract the monitor images for yourself and edit each frame individually:
  • Rename z_HolovidMonitors.pak to z_HolovidMonitors.zip.
  • Extract z_HolovidMonitors.zip and open the folders to ...\z_HolovidMonitors\Libs\UI\HUD\Monitors.
  • Edit the .dds files for RectangleMonitor01, RectangleMonitor02, or SquareMonitor01 to your liking.
    • The frames are numbered in hexadecimal and in odd numbers, from 3 to 23. The animation loop starts from 3 and ends at 23.
    • The files had a blue filter applied to them and will be shown as is for Clan 'Mechs. In-game, all IS 'Mechs have a yellow filter applied to their monitors.
    • Some 'Mechs have their monitor images reflected either vertically or horizontally. I think this design choice was for visual variety, but it is annoying.
  • Export the images to the same filenames in the extract (In GIMP, you will need to set the DDS export compression to BC3/DXT5).
  • When done, zip up the contents of Libs\... and rename the .zip file to .pak.
  • Move the .pak file to the directory mentioned in Installation.
You can also edit the .gfx related to each monitor (I used Flash Free Decompiler for this), though I have only been successful at subtracting frames from the monitors' videos. Even so, to my knowledge, the monitors share the same 17-frame timer for looping, so having a smaller GIF will only mean that the final frame is held until it can loop.
