Responsive NPCs

Behaviour and reaction tweaks for a more immersive gameplay

👤 General Crowd Tweaks

Naked Checks
  • Most NPCs react when they see a nude V, with some exceptions (e.g., homeless or poor NPCs)
  • Reactions include comments and walking away
  • NCPD and gang NPCs trigger "early detect" mode, keeping a keen eye on naked V but not triggering escalation unless provoked
  • Cyberware level affects NPC reactions to nudity (e.g., a fully borged naked V causes increased crowd alarm)

Armed Presence
  • Carrying heavy weapons (sniper, rifle, shotgun) in corpo locations like Corpo Plaza, City Center, etc triggers early detection from NCPD and armed NPCs (does not escalate to combat until provoked)
  • Even generally being armed with any weapon increases detection rate slightly against all armed NPCs
  • Scanning armed NPCs within their field of vision slightly increases detection rate
  • Military-affiliated clothing slightly increases overall detection rate

Vehicle Reactions
  • NPCs actively dodge player's vehicle when honked on while driving on the pavement (you need to be driving completely on the pavement)
  • Drunk driving earns early detection from NCPD (doesn't trigger combat unless provoked)
  • Vehicles NPCs no longer start panic driving on small bumps. They can still panic drive on vehicle bump but only for high velocity hits.
  • Weaponized vehicles slightly increase detection rate from all armed NPCs
  • Vehicle NPCs comment and occasionally honk back when honked at
  • Vehicles with Crystal Dome decrease detection rate

Other NPC Reaction Tweaks
  • NPCs run away in fear when you have 4 or more wanted stars
  • Repeatedly bumping into walking NCPD officers or Barghest soldiers can provoke combat
  • Rich and corpo NPCs look at you with disgust if you're sporting poor or cheap clothing (facial reaction only)

🔍 Disguise System

Clothing Affiliation
  • NPCs react dynamically based on your outfit's gang or corpo affiliation
  • Wear gang-affiliated clothes to reduce detection by allies and increase it for rivals. Modded clothes can also be supported - learn more here.
  • NCPD-affiliated attire increases detection rates from all gangs
  • NCPD-affiliated clothes also directly trigger combat with Barghest soldiers in Dog Town
Affiliation is calculated based on equipped items, including vanilla and modded clothes, as well as Equipment-Ex slots if installed.
Detection multiplier stacks per clothing slot (head: 15%, face: 10%, outer chest: 12.5%, inner chest: 12.5%, legs: 10%) with total detection rate can vary up to +/- 60%

For example wearing Mox-affiliated clothes means an increased detection rate from Tyger Claws. Whereas wearing Tyger Claw clothes would mean decreased detection rate when around other Tyger Claws and increased detection rate from rival gangs (Mox, Maelstrom, or 6th street in Charter Hill)

Vehicle Affiliation
  • Driving gang-affiliated vehicles affects detection rates against rival/ally gangs
  • Vehicle affiliation impacts detection rate by +/- 30%

Spoiler:
Show
For example, driving the Alvarado Vato causes increased detection rate around Maelstrom

Crystal Coat Disguise
  • Activating Crystal Coat during an active NCPD chase reduces detection rate by 75%
  • However - if Crystal Coat is damaged during combat and disabled, detection rate skyrockets by 300%
Enabled for vehicles with Crystal Coat such as the Rayfield cars or supported modded vehicles such as this or this. This gameplay mechanism is active for wanted levels between 1 and 4 stars. Note that this only adjusts detection rate - NCPD can still detect and trigger combat. Future updates will include penalties for activating/deactivating Crystal Coat within NCPD's field of vision, and more dynamism

👊 Quest Retaliation
  • Gangs may provoke or directly engage in combat based on your past quest choices

This system adds to the existing gang retaliation mechanism, making quest impact more noticeable. This affects provocation and escalation with NPCs throughout Night City, as well as detection rate.

Quest consequences are weighted differently, with some having more impact than others - factoring in outcomes from main quests, side quests, gigs, and select NCPD hustles. Whether you chose stealth or lethal approaches is also considered in most quests

One example: After the mission where you abduct Hanako, Arasaka soldiers around the Arasaka Waterfront will directly trigger combat with V (as it is established by then that V is directly involved in the kidnapping). This kind of calculation is done for every possible gang - fairly calculating the impact of all quest choices

Gangs also trigger combat mode directly when facing them in courier/vehicle contract missions (i.e. existing on-foot gang members trigger combat if you drive past them. Additional chases are not spawned)

🗣 Custom Clothing Reactions
  • NPCs provide dynamic comments on modded clothes with specific tags
  • Current reaction presets include positive comments, annoyance or fear
  • Custom reaction presets and custom NPC dialogues is being worked on
  • Guide available for clothing mod creators to support this feature here

👀 Stalking System
  • NPCs become aware if you persistently follow them
  • Civilians may run away if you creep them out enough
  • Stalking patrolling on-foot NCPD officers/Barghest soldiers in Dog Town can provoke them, potentially escalating to combat

Note:  Mod Settings support is included - but is optional and only if you want to disable certain systems. Note: the entire mod cannot be disabled from Mod Settings, only the systems displayed in Mod Settings. Languages supported: English, Spanish, Thai, Japanese, Russian, and German.

What this mod does NOT do and actively steers away from:
  • Does NOT trigger gang-related vehicle chases
  • Does NOT spawn more/less NPCs or gangs
  • Does NOT adjust crowd density
