Summary

Caster progression is now more intuitive and rewarding, from more freedom when choosing spells to more impactful class features. The full list of changes is below.

This mod uses the Compatibility Framework for spell progression but not class progression.

Spell Progression

The number of spells classes learn on level up is increased and standardized. This is a buff to most classes--notably Sorcerer, Warlock, Way of the Four Elements, and Ranger--and a nerf to Wizard, making spell scribing more relevant.

The methods I used for this are available under Documentation.

List

  • Full casters learn two spells at odd levels and one spell at even levels.
  • Full casters learn two cantrips at levels 1, 5, and 9.
  • Half casters learn spells and cantrips according to ceil(level / 2) starting at level 2 (level 3 for one-third casters).
  • One-third casters are subclasses with half-caster progression.
  • Cantrips scale at levels 1, 5, and 9.

Class Progression

Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard have class- and subclass-specific changes.

Druid

  • Fungal Infestation is Sovereign Glut's Animating Spores (modified to work as a player spell). It works like Dominate Person, but the target has to be dead, it doesn't try to break free, and it doesn't have to be humanoid.
  • Natural Recovery works with 6th level spell slots [6].

Sorcerer

  • Create Sorcery Points and Create Spell Slot work with 6th level spell slots and have short rest cooldowns [6].

Warlock

  • Eldritch Invocations are unlocked at levels 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 and organized by spell level.
  • Eldritch Invocations that used spell slots have short rest cooldowns instead [7].
  • Fiendish Vigour grants Proficiency in Constitution Saving Throws.
  • Pact Magic spell slots are unlocked at levels 1, 3, and 7.
  • Pact of the Chain familiars have scaling bonuses to attack, damage, health, and AC [8]. Their abilities are rebalanced, they can be summoned in combat, and they're separate from Find Familiar.
  • Pact of the Chain familiars include an Intellect Devourer and a Redcap. Like the Imp and Quasit, they have resistance to non-magical weapons.
  • Pact of the Tome spells that had cooldowns use spell slots instead [7].
  • Lifedrinker is available at level 7 level 5. It does 1d4 + Charisma Modifier bonus Necrotic damage and heals you for one quarter of the total damage dealt. (Changed in Update 2.2)
  • Mystic Arcanum has a short rest cooldown [6].
  • Dark One's Blessing gives temporary hit points based on your Proficiency Bonus (12 to 24).
  • Mortal Reminder applies to Critical Hits and killing blows.
  • Beguiling Defences gives advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws.

Wizard

  • Arcane Recovery works with 6th level spell slots [6].
  • Spell Scribing is free for spells in your chosen school and 100 gold per spell level for other spells.
  • Grim Harvest now heals you for half of the total damage dealt by your spells and effects that deal Necrotic damage (one quarter for non-spell effects).
  • Undead Thralls: Additional Undead is removed.
  • Undead Thralls: Better Summons gives creatures created with Animate Dead temporary hit points and bonuses to attack, damage, and AC according to their Proficiency Bonus [9].
  • Undead Thralls: Better Summons gives creatures created with Create Undead Grim Harvest.
  • Inured to Undeath lets you cast Animate Dead without a corpse [9]. However, you can no longer be healed by normal means.

Update 2.1

  • Pact of the Chain familiars' bonuses to attack and health are improved, they have bonuses to spell save DC, and they benefit from your Hex.

Update 2.2

  • Armour of Shadows grants +2 AC while Lightly or Heavily Obscured.
  • Beast Speech, Mask of Many Faces, Otherworldly Leap, Sculptor of Flesh, and Whispers of the Grave are removed.
  • Book of Ancient Secrets grants Disguise Self, Find Familiar, and Speak with Animals as ritual spells.
  • Calm Emotions (Archfey), Detect Thoughts (Great Old One), Phantasmal Force (Archfey), Blink (Archfey), Dominate Beast (Great Old One), and Seeming (Archfey) are removed from the Warlock spell list.
  • Cloak of Flies is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants Insect Plague.
  • Eldritch Mind is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants Detect Thoughts as a passive.
  • Eldritch Sight is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants See Invisibility as a passive.
  • Minions of Chaos grants Conjure Minor Elemental.
  • Misty Visions is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants Seeming.
  • Mystic Arcanum options include Disintegrate and Otto's Irresistible Dance.
  • Resistance, Produce Flame, Animal Friendship, Inflict Wounds, Ray of Sickness, Sanctuary, Enhance Ability (Archfey), Moonbeam (Archfey), Silence (Great Old One), Beacon of Hope (Archfey), Blink, Speak with Dead, Phantasmal Killer (Great Old One), Polymorph, Contagion, Dispel Evil and Good (Archfey), and Planar Binding are added to the Warlock spell list.
  • Shroud of Shadows is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants Blur.
  • Undying Servitude is a new Eldritch Invocation that grants Death Ward.

Notes

  • Circle of the Land learns Shocking Grasp as a bonus cantrip.
  • Warlock learns 6th level spells via Mystic Arcanum.
  • Paladin and Ranger use the Cleric and Druid spell lists, respectively, for cantrips.
  • Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight use the full Wizard spell list.
  • Way of the Four Elements learns its 1 Ki spells as cantrips.
  • With so many ways to get extra casts of 6th level spells, it's inconsistent for class features to be capped at 5th level.
  • Animate Dead, Bestow Curse, Death Ward, and Polymorph are now bonus actions. This is done for feature parity with Better Action Economy without making it a requirement.
  • This also applies to Shovel.
  • This also works with Create Undead.
