The Longest Journey HD is a mod for one of the best adventure games ever made. It includes neural network upscaled backgrounds and sprites, redrawn user interface and a lot of other small improvements thanks to ResidualVM implementation of the game engine. I wouldn't call it the final release, rather version 1.0. There is always room for improvement, because SISR algorithms are not perfect and the quality of the original graphics assets is not consistent. Anyway, future updates (if any) will be mostly cosmetic, nothing significant. Enjoy the game! P. S. Special thanks to bgK for his extensive support and assistance.

Description

The Longest Journey HD graphics mod. Upscaled in-game videos (FMV) are available as a separate download. Please, read the installation instructions below.

Hello! I'm using this mod and I love it (thank you!!) but I've run into a bug in Chapter 4 where I can't select the closet in the witch's house, meaning I can't continue with the story. I have tried clicking everywhere alone, and with the broom. I'm afraid I'd have to start this game again in Steam since I think it's a ResidualVM bug.

Do you have a save for the start of Chapter 5? Then I could skip the bugged section and not have to replay. Thank you!

Hi. There was such a bug in the initial version of the mod, but I fixed it the next day. There are no any game breaking bugs in the current version of the mod.

Here's a savegame right after the Gribbler's Lair scene: Mega.nz

Thank you so much, this is awesome. I was actually having trouble playing the gog version that I bought recently but it works great with your mod and residualvm. It must have taken you ages to make this, really appreciate it!

I followed all steps, I have crisp fonts but backgrounds and cursors are same low res. I have all pngs in LJ folder under mods subfolder as mentioned in guide. Is there any way on how to point path to mod? Or am I missing something?

Thank you.

The path must be 'The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\'. With lots of subfolders inside it. If you followed the instructions then everything should work. Really. You just add the game in ResidualVM, tick a few checkboxes and that's it.

Hi! Compliments for the mod! I'm playing the game for the first time thanks to the mod.
I found a bug: when you are in the wizard's castle in chapter 5 and you can enter here:
Youtu.be (at 5.46.58) the hd textures do not allow to move towards the door at the top and the floor is staggered.
From residual it can be overcome by removing modHD for a moment and continuing without. Done you can reactivate.

Actually, I stumbled upon this bug myself during my playthrough. At first I decided the mod caused it, but then I restarted ResidualVM and the bug was gone with the mod still active. I tried to reproduce it with the latest save, but without success, so I decided that it was a weird one-time bug. Well, it seems it's not. I'm still not sure what causes it though.

Everything works just great! I'm so happy playing one of my favorite point&click; games with enhanced visuals I just can't get enough of it!! You made a fantastic job and, to be honest with you, you deserve to be paid for it. Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing it with everyone for free. it means a lot to me!

Wow, this is really great, couldn't get the game to work properly before, but having installed this and the extra video pack it works a real treat and looks great. Only one issue, the cut scene vids tend to stick a bit and don't run entirely smooth.
Not sure if there's a setting somewhere I can tweak to make them run smoother.
Otherwise fantastic! Thanks!

Great mod Faberman, thanks for your hard work!
The one issue i have is that i cannot transfer the Font folder as my system tells me that folder is in use.. I have no idea what by. Is it 100% necessary as all the files in that folder are identical to the ones already in the original game installation Font folder?

It's definitely not necessary then. Fonts folder is only for those who wants to restore the original game fonts, because Steam version lacks them.

Faberman, this is a phenomenal job. I am so thrilled, I just plugged my laptop to a 4K TV and it looks beautiful. I have this list of games to replay and TLJ was long waiting for an opportunity like this! Do you have a Patreon or sth similar to support your work?

Does at least people at Funcom know about this work, or the people from Adventure Gamers? Maybe this game is long forgotten now as the genre, but really this job is stupendous! If it was more popular, you would get much more appreciation than this. They should be the ones to do such a remaster.

Ragnar Tornquist retweeted ModDB's tweet about this mod, so at least he knows about it. I think Funcom is not very interested in remastering TLJ, but maybe one day we'll see a full remake in Dreamfall Chapters's engine. Although even Chapters development was crowd-funded.

At least it's nice he's aware. Popularity of the genre is going downhill since decades now, so there is no interest and no financial gain, which is completely normal, there is no market. But at least we have you to help the few of us to still enjoy this game. I tried to play Chapters, but I wasn't fond of it and the visual design neither (TLJ is a classic, and Dreamfall was nice and minimalistic). I think your remaster is great, it just need a remodel of the characters, backgrounds are perfectly fine (for me it is all about nostalgia in the end, and I love this game for voice acting which never gets old). As once a co-creator of a Dreamfall fan website years ago (like 15?), which doesn't exists anymore, I thank you very much for this amazing job again!

This seems like an awesome mod! I regret that I am having a sort of weird problem with it that I cannot seem to find an answer to simply through Googling. If someone can help me with this, I would be much appreciative.

Basically, I got this game on Steam and was having some trouble with the controls, so I did a little digging. First found out about ResidualVM and installed it, ran the game on there. It solved the first problem, but it created another problem in that the dialogue font had reverted to a plain format. Also, initially I couldn't figure out how to run it on full screen mode (figured that out; see below). Temporarily accepted the lack of full screen, tried tweaking with the fonts, couldn't really get it to work.

Then I stumbled across this, which just seems great. I downloaded it and followed the instructions. I booted it up and it looked great. The dialogue font was restored and looked much better than it did in Steam. Then I figured out how to run full screen mode in ResidualVM. The game still looks great, but now there is no dialogue font at all. I tried switching it back to windowed mode, still no luck. Tried removing and replacing the mods and fonts folders repeatedly--still didn't work.

Is there anyone who can help me with this? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall the game? Is there a way to run this on full screen mode in ResidualVM AND keep the dialogue font, etc.? Very sorry to be asking for help on such a petty problem, and one that no one else seems to be having...

I also have TLJ on Steam, so I can confirm it runs in fullscreen (p.5 of the instructions) with the original fonts. I suggest to completely uninstall the game and manually delete the remaining game folder, then install everything again.

I just registered to say THANK YOU so much for this incredible mod. I ran this on my 11-year-old MacBook Pro with OSX 10.11 and NVIDI 9600M GT with the 1080p FMV pack. I played it on my 4K TV and it looked excellent. This mod makes such a big difference. I've been unable to play TLJ since I got rid of my PC 6-7 years ago, and it's been an amazing journey to revisit all of the incredible characters, stories and locations that I love. TLJ is my favorite game of all time.

I had one very strange glitch--not sure if it's an issue with ResidualVM or with the mod itself. When working on the potions in Roper Klack's mansion, if I clicked the "Exit" hotspot on the bottom left of the cauldron screen, it took me to just outside The Gribbler's house. I tried to move forward back to the floating castle, but couldn't get past the gargoyles again. I ended up using a save game and figured out that I had to "Exit" the cauldron screen by using the hotspot at the top left. Weird issue, but glad I got it to work.

One thing that's super helpful for those who want to save time running back/forth is mapping the key for "Skip Animation" in ResidualVM to something easily accessible. I mapped it to a side button on my USB mouse and so I could fast-forward all of the animations of April walking/running back and forth.

Hi. Is there a way to edit fonts used? When game runs from ResidualVM "gui.ini" which is used for font setup seems to be ignored. I play the game in Czech localisation and need to use font which supports czech special characters. Currently can't find a way to force different fonts.

Yes, it is possible. You need to change the filenames of your custom fonts to match the original fonts filenames for dialogues, menu and tooltips. Then copy your renamed custom fonts to the game's Fonts folder.

Hi, playing the Game for the first Time, so I was happy to find your Mod

:) Thank you for the Great work

but I have one Problem with the Fonts, they are chopped, example: The Word

"Begin" (English) is most the same in German "Beginn" but what I see in

the Game is "...ginn" so the "Be" is missing or the Word "and" in German

"und" what I see in the Game is "..nd" so some Letters are replaced with

dots, and this happen in the Menu and Dialogues. I delete the FONTS folder

and the Letters become normal, but with the Mod the Letters get extrem

small, any idea what cause this Problem?

I have the GoG version. I downloaded a fresh "Arial.ttf" file and replaced

the one in the Font folder, but still the same Problem.Bye Have a nice day

The mod includes the original fonts from English GOG version. Probably different languages have different fonts. Just use the fonts from your version, don't replace them.

I was having the same problem as you and it turned out that the dots were caused by using the latest daily build of ResidualVM. I installed the build linked in the HD mod page and that solved it.

Are upscaled textures for the 3D models planned in the future? Looks like ResidualVM supports it now. Fantastic mod btw :)

Hi,

the mod on ResidualVM works great until chapter two, when I am in Arcadia and want to go to the city from the market place. It then states "ERROR: Unable to open archive 2c/2c.arcx" and a debugger starts. What am I supposed to do? Did something go wrong while installing?

Thanks.

Edit: Nevermind, I found the missing file in another folder.

Hey, thanks for all the amazing work so far! Is there any plans to improve it further? For example, there's lots and lots of dithering in all the prerendered animations present, and now being upscaled it looks kinda even more noticeable and nastier than before. Would it be hard to do some preprocessing on assets like that?

thank you so much for your beautiful work. my favorite game and game series period, yet ive never looked up mods for it. i really appreciate this. btw, everyone should use scummVM instead of residualVM as that is very old and its functions are a part of scumVM. also, if you set scummVM to use opengl, you can hook a reshade to its exe using opengl(scummVM.exe not game.exe) adaptive sharpen and hdr look great but the possibilities are endless.
