Skywalkers: A Love Story is riveting and engrossing. The cinematography is beautiful, capturing the wonder and danger of being so high. The editing is sublime.
Skywalkers: A Love Story is a dizzying and dazzling look at a hyper-niche culture that delivers some of the most jaw-dropping real-life footage you'll likely ever see.
That Skywalkers: A Love Story maintains its grip on your attention despite some of director Jeff Zimbalist’s florid aesthetic choices testifies to the strength of the documentary’s central narrative.
Skywalkers might be the first of a new genre: extended vlog (or TikTok, or Instragram reel) as feature film, existing somewhere between fact and fiction and all in service of promoting a brand.
You get the impression they are only comfortable sharing their lives when they’re perched above where the rest of us live. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find them swoon-worthy, never mind the cryptocurrencies and branded partnerships circling their pursuits.

Their story seems genuine, but the filmmaking can make it all feel premeditated, in part because directors Jeff Zimbalist and Maria Bukhonina are determined to hit every plot turn at the most obvious points.
The force is not strong in “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” a shallow “Man on Wire” for social media influencers about a pair of Russian daredevils who stealthily scale urban heights to attain the precious treasure of a much-liked Instagram post.

Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus made a name for themselves scaling incredible heights on tall buildings around the world. This doc chronicles their early work, their burgeoning relationship and their final challenge, performing an acrobatic stunt on the spire of the 118-story Malaysian ****, Merdeka 118. One of the best features of this film is that they shot video of most of their work (and even their private time), so there's lots of footage. The climbs are all vertigo-inducing, even on the home screen they're constantly chilling. After their "ascent" to fame, there's a period where the relationship falters, but stick thru that drama lull for the last 30 minutes, as they make their difficult and demanding way to the spire. It's as gripping as any Hollywood thriller. Ultimately, this film not only gives us insight into their personal and professional accomplishments, it's ultimately an appreciation of their skill at creating daring and beautiful art.
