At once a searing, affirming and defiant portrayal of race, poverty and frustrated aspiration in America.
Since much of the action takes place in the tiny apartment, director Petrie had to pull out all the stops to keep it from being stage-bound, and, with the help of cinematographer Lawton, he succeeded.

A superlative cast vividly captures the turbulence of this classic drama about the constrictions caused by race in postwar Chicago.
A very fine and strongly acted, if somewhat stagebound, adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's great, moving African-American family drama. [06 Apr 2007, p.C8]
It does have enough gritty insights and (for the time) strikingly accurate production details to keep the level of interest up.
