Until Then is a story-rich adventure full of standouts: its beautiful pixel art, relatable protagonist, realistic character dynamics, and thoughtful representation of Filipino culture. It’s a coming-of-age tale worth experiencing.
Until Then is a must-play for lovers of narrative-focused games everywhere. The game already depicts living the life of a teenager in the Phillippines in the 2010s beautifully with its thoughtful and authentic writing, combined with a picturesque world. That alone would be enough, but it goes above and beyond, adding breathtaking pixel animation, an intriguing mystery and a palpable geopolitical subplot. The cast of characters is incredibly endearing and you’ll grow to love them all, building to the final emotional gut punch of the game that takes the wind out of you. Joining the plethora of quality narratives in 2024, Until Then is a game you won’t soon forget.
Just warning, if the game credits screen happened on a televesion and not on the fullscreen, you haven't finished the game, if you start a new game you'll get a new campaing, almost completely different of the first one
As a Filipino, this game resonated with me in a way no game has ever done. The feeling of the world almost ending and wishing it would have, but we have to continue living. The feeling of losing that "spark" and finding a way to get it back. The game did a great job of incorporating drama, romance, mystery, sci-fi, and even horror into its story. In the end I was left weeping and felt a sense of longing to see my friends and my family.
(PS there's a part 2 and 3 after the 1st credits! Don't forget to do those)
This game really put in the feel of the Philippines at it core and that is amazing to see, but this is a game that everyone can enjoy and everyone should play this at some point in their life.
To Polychroma, I hope your next game will be as astounding as this one.
Until Then offers a compelling coming-of-age story infused with supernatural elements. Set in a post-disaster town, players follow high schooler Mark and his friends as they navigate personal challenges and mysterious occurrences. Despite some narrative pacing issues and a lack of supernatural exploration, the game's immersive setting, relatable character dynamics, and unique visual presentation make it a captivating experience.
My feelings about Until Then evolved the longer I played. What at first seemed like a slow-paced visual novel with retro graphics gradually began to reveal itself as something much more sophisticated. Excellent character development and a surprising, emotionally varied narrative are at the heart of Until Then, but its storytelling mechanics are fresh and contemporary, too. Mark and his gang have interesting stories to tell, and so does Until Then.
While the setting and inspirations are Filipino through and through, the themes of friendship, love, loss, and acceptance in this visual novel are universal.
Romantic relationships here come with the types of complexities that you’d expect—jealous friends, misunderstandings, and stupid decisions—such that the sincere moments that come afterward feel earned.
Until Then has an interesting art style and some decent writing, but mundane pacing, limited interactivity and contrived, poorly delivered drama make for a forgettable adventure.
The game's art and visual style is pretty interesting, even though his story and narrative is somewhat cliche, like something i already seen before in a teenager TV series.
SummaryA fateful meeting sets off a chain reaction, upending Mark's life. People disappear and memories prove unreliable. Uncover a hidden truth with Mark and his friends in this narrative adventure and race to unravel the mystery before it's too late.
