A breath of fresh air and a genuine contender for one of 2024’s best games yet, Dungeons of Hinterberg is a no-brainer pickup - whether you’re subscribed to Game Pass or not.
Dungeons of Hinterberg cleverly combines puzzles, combat and relationship-building into a tidy package that is captivating despite its low-pressure vibes. Each dungeon is distinct and satisfying in terms of style and mechanics, and combat is just the right amount of crunchy to feel fun throughout the adventure. The gorgeous aesthetic makes Hinterberg and its surroundings a lovely place to spend time, too, and the quirky characters you’ll meet along the journey are all worth getting to know. With some truly memorable moments, Dungeons of Hinterberg is sure to scratch the itch of any wannabe dungeon-crawler with a penchant for problem-solving and is a stand-out indie effort in a year chock full of them.
Stunning, casual and cosy dungeon crawler with a unique storyline and setting. It's a combination and love letter to some of my favourite games of all time. It reminds me of the platformer games I used to play as a kid and brought back some fond memories of Spyro/Tomb Raider etc! Would highly recommend if you want a mix of puzzles and combat encased in a gorgeous art style.
Dungeons of Hinterberg is a celebration of recreation and an assertion that video games can be not only a fun escape but a chance to dream of something outside of our routine spheres of life. It’s wonderfully imaginative, beautiful, and sometimes trippy to look at, and it is thoughtful about its subject matter. If you need a break from life, Dungeons of Hinterberg is here for your slaying needs.
Playing Dungeons of Hinterberg is a fun experience and a nice break from games with darker themes. The artwork, too, adds levity to the feeling of the game. Luisa is a relatable character, too. She went into a career and lived the way she thought was right, but it led to her realizing that she doesn’t actually enjoy how her life turned out, and she decides that slaying monsters is the break she needs to fight off her burnout. All-in-all, I think this is a game worth trying if you enjoy a mix of dungeon diving, action, and social simulation.
Dungeons of Hinterberg feels like a fresh breath of the Austrian Alps as it recontextualizes familiar action-RPG elements in a charming and modern feeling adventure.
Call it “cozy Zelda,” call it “Zelda Crossing,” call it “Persona of the Wild” if needed, it’s really just a charming blend of all these notions, and certain standout dungeons on their own are worth chartering a flight to Dungeons of Hinterberg.
Every night in Hinterberg ends with a Stardew Valley-esque recap of your day that encapsulates the game’s innovative blend of dungeon crawling and social simulation. You’re reminded of the undead Miner’s Widow you conquered, alongside the HP you gained from meditation. Staring down the barrel of another day of dungeoneering can be offputting, especially with the prospect of an over-familiar puzzle or frustrating fight on the horizon. Still, Dungeons of Hinterberg’s personable cast and stunning environments provided the necessary pockets of reprieve that kept me wanting to wake up and face the day every next morning.
Such a fun game! I love the art style and the way it plays - it's really intuitive with the controls. The gameplay loop is great and easy to follow but also has depth to the storyline that is really relatable! Can't wait to keep playing and find out what's really going on in this town!
A great dungeon crawler with a lot of character. The dungeons are all really fun to explore and all feel quite different from one another. They are not quite Zelda level or anything like that, but they definitely have the feel of those, as they are all a nice mix of combat and puzzles. The story and setting is also very interesting, although the bad guy is very comically evil. The social aspect is fun as you are introduced to a lot of different people in town. Most citizens are interesting, but there are a handful that are just kind of unlikeable people.
Getting different spells in every zone also changes the gameplay up a bit, as the hack and slash combat, while fun and more than serviceable, can get a tad stale by the end. The combat, once you have lots of gear and stats, gets a tad too easy near the end of the game. Speaking of gear, while it's fun to get new gear, the only design thing that shows on your character is the sword. I would have liked to change my look up a little bit with new gear, as your character looks a tad plain. Also, it might have been fun if there were different weapons types instead of just 1-handed swords.
Overall, it's a great game that has a fun day to day cycle that keeps you engaged all the way to the end. Highly recommend it, especially if you have GamePass.
constantly freezes and it's boring too. mostly puzzles and climbing. this is basically every dungeon: you enter an area monsters appear you kill them usually just button mash maybe dodge now and than and move on, solve puzzles and climb than fight a boss at the end. all the dungeons are linear and boring.
SummaryDungeons of Hinterberg is an action-adventure RPG that includes monster fighting, puzzle solving, magic wielding, and relationship building, all set around the cozy Alpine village of Hinterberg!
