Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3

Inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG game that brings the tactical turn-based combat of DnD to life. With plenty of classes and races for you to pick and choose, creating your character is half the fun. It gets even better when you form a team, because no adventure is complete without your merry band of adventurers.

For players new to this type of live-action, tactical, turn-based combat, the control scheme and gameplay might take some getting used to.

The story of Baldur’s Gate 3 is another reason to play this game. With beautiful graphics and incredible voice acting, it does a great job at immersing you into their world. Be wary though, for your actions have consequences, and they will affect the story you write.

System requirements: macOS 10.15.7, 2.3 Ghz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 16 GB RAM, 150 GB HD space, 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M.

Hades Mac featured

Hades

In this latest Action-RPG masterpiece from Supergiant Games, you play as an immortal prince of the Greek underworld, Zagreus. Zagreus, (or Zag), fights through the land of the dead in an attempt to escape his father Hades and flee to his relatives in Olympus. But even a godling has troubles escaping from death’s domain. The story of this father-son conflict and the effects on their relatives has continually revealed the more attempts you make at escaping.

Gameplay-wise, it delivers a crisp, reactive, and rhythmic combat flow. Your reflexes, wit, and luck will be tested in this randomly changing environment, where each run will bring different dungeons, weapons, and powerups. Try and try again, with different combinations of weapons and boons to break free of the underworld.

In short, calling Hades a fast-paced, rouge-like, dungeon-crawling masterpiece of a game would not do it justice. With stunning visuals, a killer soundtrack, an immersive story, and memorable voice acting, Hades is an experience to remember.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium isn’t just one of the best macOS games of 2023. It’s also one of the best isometric RPG games ever made. You dawn the role of an amnesic detective who’s head deep into solving a murder mystery in the seaside district of Martinaise in the imaginary city of Revachol.

What this game does great is nail the gritty and dark atmosphere of the title while also providing an experience that isn’t too far detached from reality. It also addresses a few intriguing and engaging philosophical questions, political ideologies, and more.

The alternative history and post-war setting, with a cast of memorable characters, captivating dialogue, and some decent encounters running its course on a dice-rolling system, depending on your stats, is an entertaining idea that the developers played around with.

System requirements: macOS 10.11 or later, Intel Core i5 or better Processor, NVIDIA GTX 650 or better Video, 8 GB RAM, 18 GB of Hard Drive space.

Star Wars KOTOR 2

Star Wars: KOTOR 2

If you like your RPGs set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, boy, have we got you covered. The sequel to what many consider one of the top computer games of all time, Knights of the Old Republic 2 (KOTOR 2), takes place 4,000 years before the events of Episode I in the movie series.

Also, like the original, the sequel was very late coming to the Mac, following the Windows release by a cool ten years. That said, the game was remastered and brought to modern times by Aspyr in 2015. You can now enjoy it with better graphics, sounds, and an increased resolution. And despite all those years, it remains, like the original, one of the best sci-fi RPG games you can find.

Featuring a great story, interesting characters, and pausable real-time combat, Star Wars KOTOR 2 allows you to join the dark or the light side as you work to rebuild your connection to the Force and find the remaining Jedi after they have been mostly wiped out by the Sith. Possibly the finest Star Wars experience that can be had on MacOS, KOTOR 2’s age means it’s playable on a wide variety of MacBooks, easily making it our Macbook Pick.

System requirements: macOS 10.9.5, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 330M, ATI Radeon HD3870, Intel HD 3000, 10 GB hard drive space.

Path of Exile

Path of Exile

If you’re looking for an RPG game to play, look no further.

Path of Exile is a Diablo-Esque RPG, featuring a similar-looking HUD, potions, inventory, and combat system. But don’t write it off as some wannabe Diablo clone, because Path of Exile is fun in its own right. With interesting classes that you can customize towards a particular style, items that dictate what kind of skills you can use, and a skill tree so massive it should be renamed to a skill forest, PoE allows tons of builds and pathways for your characters. The visuals of this game are also great. It fulfils the gritty and grim atmosphere of the story, and the characters and enemies are interesting to look at.

If you’re looking to scratch that Diablo itch and more, give Path of Exile a try.

System requirements: macOS 10.15, 2.6 GHz hex-core Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 40 GB HD space (SSD is recommended), AMD Radeon Pro 555X.

Diablo III

Diablo 3

Diablo practically defined the classic combat RPG genre. Around since the last millennium (1996 specifically), there still are no more fun ways to hack and slash your way to victory.

Continuing the story told in the first two installments, Diablo 3 is a classic hack n’ slash RPG with all the elements you expect: dungeons, monsters, fierce bosses, and a richer story than found in many RPGs. And it’s from Blizzard, which means you can get your RPG fix the same day as Windows users. And though we waited 12 years for the third installment, when it came out there was a unanimous agreement that the wait was worth it.

The Rise of the Necromancer expansion is keeping the game somewhat fresh, but the community can’t wait for Diablo 4 to release sometime next year. On the flip side, thanks to Blizzard’s “Starter Game” concept, this one of the few RPGs for Mac that you can try before you buy. If you’re looking to dip your toes into the waters, Diablo 3 is as good a place to start as any.

System requirements: macOS 10.11, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 320M, ATI Radeon HD4670 or Intel HD Graphics 4000, 25 GB hard drive space.

Undertale

Undertale

Similar to Octopath Traveler 2, Undertale is an RPG that excels thanks to its use of throwback pixelated graphics. And while the look is classic, the tone is modern.

Undertale takes place in a world where monsters were locked Underground long ago after losing a war with humans. Your character stumbles through the magic barrier that leads to the monster-filled Underground and must find her way back up top. And while you can fight your way to victory, you can also win this game by being kind and sparing your enemies, and the way you play will affect how the game unfolds. Undertale quickly became a fan favorite for its old-fashioned look and unique story and gameplay. And with your interactions having a major effect on how the game plays out, Undertale has excellent replay value.

This all explains why Undertale was a multiple award winner, including Best Game Ever in a GameFAQs poll. Able to run on just about any Mac thanks to its old-school graphics, Undertale is AAA gameplay at a budget. So, if you enjoy retro-looking RPGs but with a modern sensibility, Undertale is for you.

Darkest Dungeon Mac 900p

Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike (think permadeath) game with turn-based combat. But Darkest Dungeon is unique thanks to its Affliction System, where the characters in your party, in addition to suffering damage from enemies, will also suffer increasing levels of stress, paranoia and more as your quest continues, which will impact their ability to assist you in combat.

This leads to another fun and different feature, the need to rest and relax in between your battles; go into town, relax and level back up, then head back underground for more battles. Featuring a unique 2D hand-drawn style and a gothic atmosphere, Darkest Dungeon is one of the most unique games on this list. It’s also one of the more difficult games, so if you don’t like having your characters die and need replacing (remember, I did say permadeath) you might want to look elsewhere.

But if you can take it, you’ll be rewarded with hours of gameplay and the satisfaction of defeating a truly difficult game. And thanks to the 2D graphics, you can put yourself through this almost literal torture on just about any machine from the past several years.
System requirements: macOS 10.9, 2 GB RAM, OpenGL 3.2 Compliant, 2 GB hard drive space.

Pillars of Eternity 2

Pillars of Eternity 2

The follow-up to our previous winner had a lot to live up to, and by and large Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire delivers.

Picking up after the events of the original, one of the most crowdfunded games of all time, Deadfire takes what’s great about the original and puts it to sea. Literally. In Pillars of Eternity  2, you’re pursuing a rogue god over land and sea through the Deadfire Archipelago, using your ship to travel from place to place. With the same focus on exploration, story, and character as the original, Deadfire is just as engaging and fun to explore. Setting it at sea and adding naval battles (or piracy, if you will) is the icing on the cake.

Upgraded graphics, game mechanics and already announced DLC round out the experience. Pillars of Eternity was designed as a modern take on the classic RPG and it delivered beautifully. The original is a hard act to follow, but PoE 2: Deadfire lives up to it and is our pick for Best RPG for Mac.

System requirements: macOS 10.12.6, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT750M, 45 GB hard drive space.

Our Criteria

Games have a largely subjective aspect to them. You may love some games, while I might prefer completely different ones. This is why we identified a set of criteria that every single one of our picks has to meet:

Native support: This should go without saying, but each and every one of the games mentioned here has to be officially supported on macOS and does not require Bootcamp or Wine. We’ve seen too many Top Games for macOS lists that feature Windows-only games…

macOS performance: There’s a plethora of reliable Windows-PC reviews, guides, and videos on the internet. However, they never acknowledge MacOS gaming. This is why our focus is always on the Mac performance of the games listed here.

Critical acclaim: Video games can be subjective, but to keep this guide as relevant as possible, we only consider proven games with positive reviews from both professional reviewers and average gamers.

Pricing: We all want quality, but pricing also plays an important role. We always keep in mind price tags and production value to give indies and AAA games equal chances. After all, we’re after games that are fun to play. Looks are important but fun gameplay is even more so.

Last updated: December 18, 2023

How about Torchlight II. I’ve never played Diablo 3, but it seems that Torchlight II is universally reviewed as a better game. Plus there’s a demo on Steam and the fully version is only $20.

Good point and that one almost made the list (I think it was on mine but not Ric’s) and probably should at least have been mentioned. Thanks for bringing it up though, and I didn’t realize there was a demo on Steam.

I’m curious…why do you include Knights of the Old Republic 2, and even praise the original KOTOR in it’s description, yet snub the original KOTOR on your list? The sequel is good, and I certainly respect the darker aspects that it gained over the original, but even with Aspyr’s recent release of it for the Mac which improved over the earlier Windows release in many ways, KOTOR2 is still compromised, and doesn’t reach the heights of the original Knights of the Old Republic. As you said in KOTOR2’s description, the original may be the best computer game of all time. So, doesn’t that mean it deserves to be included in this list?

    • Steven Marx

It’s an excellent question and I was torn on which way to go on this one as KOTOR is generally considered the better game. But I think ultimately Ric and I decided to focus on the newer games if we were going with a series.

      • Mark

Has KOTOR been updated? Early versions of it were incredibly buggy and required lowering graphics and other settings just to make it sort of playable. KOTOR2 has so far been much more stable for me. Definitely belongs on your list.

I would add Drakensang online to this list. Its free to join, video quality graphics, just do the opening quests. Right now there is an event in the capital city of Kingshill, involving going into the sewers to fight the giant rats and other nasties. Several quests, I’ve only just started in this event.

I’ve heard some good things about it. But if we decide to mention it and recommend it, it will be at our Top MMORPGs page. Easier for everyone to find it.

Thanks for sharing, I’ll definitely check it out.

Guild Wars 2. Game client still in Beta mode, but been running it while bugging along with the rest of the gameworld population for four years now. It is beautiful to say the least, and is free to play for starters (till you are tired of not being able to use more than say chat and messaging, but if you have your own people on voice comms it is fine).

You can max out your character till level 80, but not use the trading post on a free account. Look out for Christmas or pre-expansion sales.

It’s beautiful. The multiplayer PvP is engrossing, once you get into it, too, but has its own spirit.

Planetscape: Torment was a recent discovery for me, too. It does have a lot of dialogue, often amusing, which I don’t mind.

Has anyone recently played Torment: Tides of Numenera? Is there that much difference between the various editions, besides the price? Some reviews talk about its buggy performance, but maybe they have been addressed in more recent updates.
