Metro Exodus Mac featured NEW

Metro: Exodus

Welcome to post-nuclear war Moscow, a place now populated by mutated monsters and roaming bandits. If you want to shoot mutants while going cross-country on a train, Metro Exodus is the game for you.

The scenery in Metro Exodus is incredible. The beautiful snowy environment combined with the sandbox element of this game allows for some enchantingly immersive moments. Coupled with the lethal mutants and the freezing cold, it delivers the atmosphere of apocalyptic Russia like no other.

The combat in this game is a mixture of gunfights and stealth, which is a traditional, yet fun combat style. But there is a twist to this FPS. There will be important choices throughout the story, which can determine the fate of your companions. If you’re not careful with your choices, people will wind up dead. If you enjoy story-driven FPS games, Metro Exodus is an excellent choice.

System requirements: macOS 10.15, 2.0 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 40 GB HD space, 2GB AMD Radeon R9 M290 or better, 1.5GB Intel Iris 540 or better

Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2

It’s become clear that Borderlands 2 is the king of this series, with perhaps the perfect blend of shooting and looting. That’s probably why it still sees more concurrent players per day than any other game in the series, including the newer Borderlands 3.

The Borderlands series is known for its winning formula of mixing FPS gameplay with RPG mechanics, and Borderlands 2 just got it all right. Here, you will kill and loot, and gain experience points and skills. Enough features to keep you busy in the enormous world that is entirely at your disposal. The game also supports up to 4-players co-op, and needless to say, the experience is much more fun with friends. It’s not quite as evolved as Destiny 2 but Borderlands 2 can still deliver a good multiplayer experience.

One more thing…  Borderlands 2 is also beautiful, with a graphic novel style that ages well. Luckily, Aspyr did such a terrific job with the game’s Mac version that most will be able to experience it, including gamers with MacBook Airs.

System requirements: macOS 10.8.5, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB RAM, 256 MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 / NVidia Geforce 8800/ Intel HD 3000 or better, 13 GB hard drive space.

Prodeus

Prodeus is a love letter to the pixel shooters of old. Using modern technology with a hybrid combination of old and new mechanics, Prodeus is a unique shooter like no other.

With an incredible blend of both 2D and 3D graphics, meaty sounding guns, and its own brand of satisfying violence gives this game its unique edge. By combining these elements and the iconic parts of Doom, Prodeus is basically the spiritual successor to Doom in every way possible.

If you’re itching for a new fast-paced boomer shooter, try Prodeus.

Bioshock Remastered Mac

BioShock Remastered

BioShock is arguably one of the best installations in the series. Unlike the aforementioned BioShock Infinite, this game takes place in the supposedly wonderful underwater city called Rapture. The story of this game is one of my personal favorites, and I can confidently tell you that the true ending of this game made me cry like a grown man.

To top off the excellent story it provides, the combat in this game is amazing. Sure it can feel clunky and clumsy compared to newer games, and odd bugs sometimes appear during the gameplay. But there are few games out there that will let you kill something with bees while setting it on fire. Truly an incredible experience.

With its remastered graphics, you can now get the original BioShock experience in crisp HD-quality format. P.S. Be nice to the little sisters.

System requirements: macOS 10.12.5, 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 or greater, 8 GB RAM, 27 GB HD space, 2 GB NVIDIA 680MX or 2 GB AMD R9 M290 or 1.5 GB Intel Iris Pro 5200.

Dying Light

Set in a city devastated by a mysterious epidemic, you spend your days exploring a dangerous and open city, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons. With your parkour skills, you can explore and travel wherever you want; verticality is an important feature, you’ll want to think in three dimensions.

The fun begins at night when the zombies and other mysterious and worse enemies go on the attack, forcing you to use those weapons and skills to survive until dawn. Featuring single-player, multiplayer, and four-player cooperative modes, Dying Light more than fills your need for a zombie apocalypse shooter.

While this is a demanding game, it always worked great, even on our lower-end test machine. You’ll still want a fairly hearty Mac to fully enjoy it.

System requirements: macOS 10.12.1, 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor, 4 GB RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2 GB VRAM, 40 GB hard drive space.

Borderlands 3 Mac gameplay 2

Borderlands 3

From one of the best FPS series to ever exist, I present to you Borderlands 3.

Tired of shooting psychos in Borderlands 1 and 2? Shoot them again in 3 instead. Featuring new vault hunters, new skills, and new guns, the game still delivers exactly what you would expect from a Borderlands game. Shoot, kill, loot, rinse, and repeat. It definitely does not disappoint old fans of this franchise, and new players are in for a blast.

But if for any of those here for the story, this might be the wrong place for you. Borderlands was never known for its amazing plot, but it had plenty of memorable characters for you to laugh with and care for. Just look at Handsome Jack, one of the best villains in video game history. That same spark just isn’t there for this one, so take note of that before you buy.

System requirements: macOS Catalina 10.15, Intel Core i7 – 7820X, 16 GB RAM, 59 GB HD space, 4 GB AMD Radeon Pro 580.

Isonzo

Isonzo

Isonzo takes place in the intense but often overlooked Italian Front of World War I. What’s different about this tactical game is that it focuses on realism and historical accuracy instead of showing fake and unrealistic scenes. Isonzo’s high attention to detail perfectly portrays the  Alpine warfare in the Great War. Players are tasked with strategic decision-making, as the game emphasizes on realistic battle scenes, including trench warfare and mountain battles. As a result, Isonzo’s gameplay is extremely interesting and engaging.

Isonzo’s compatibility with both M1 and Intel Macs ensures a smooth and responsive experience, making it an excellent choice for history enthusiasts and fans of tactical FPS games on Macs.

System requirements: M1 or 4-Core Intel Core 2.8 GHz CPU or better, 4 GB RAM, and 8 GB available space.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Mankind Divided is the latest entry in this venerable franchise, following up on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which easily earned a place on the list thanks to its innovative approach that allows you to play the way you want. In Deus Ex, you can use the RPG-like system of augmentations to gradually evolve your character to suit your playing style.

While Feral Interactive had to delay it while waiting for Metal 2, once it arrived, it easily took its place as one of the best and most innovative shooters on the platform. With a deep story continuing from the last (and previous) installments, beautiful graphics, and replayability thanks to the augmentation system, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was worth the wait.

Be warned that in spite of being a few years old, Mankind Divided remains an extremely demanding game. One that requires a high-end machine to run properly.

System requirements: macOS 10.15, 2.0 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 40 GB HD space, 2GB AMD Radeon R9 M290 or better, 1.5GB Intel Iris 540 or better

Black Ops 3 Mac gameplay

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Serious and casual gamers alike are both familiar with the Call of Duty Franchise, a staple of the FPS genre. If your idea of a relaxing time is “run and gun,” consider playing COD Black Ops 3.

The campaign in this game is generally confusing and involves blowing up a train. The other two game modes offered are multiplayer and COD Zombies. Unfortunately, the multiplayer mode is dead. Hackers are a problem, and most people have moved on to other games. The downsides of a 6-year-old game.

The Zombies mode, however, is very active and is the most praised game mode of Black Ops 3. With a thriving modding and map-making community, there are plenty of ways to enhance your Zombie-killing enjoyment.

System requirements: macOS 10.13.6, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 (4 cores) or greater, 8 GB RAM, 150 GB HD space, 2 GB ATI Radeon M295X.

SUPERHOT Mac featured NEW

SUPERHOT

While not the most critically acclaimed or famous game on this list, Superhot is almost certainly the most innovative. In addition to not looking like the other games on the list, Superhot doesn’t play like them either.

In Superhot, you face waves of enemies, and time only moves when you do, allowing you to plan your strategy for staying alive. Think bullet-time from The Matrix with minimalist but still stylish graphics, and you’ll have some idea of what you’ll face. There is no story, health regeneration, or ammo drops here, only tight gameplay meshed into an original take on the FPS genre.

Praised for its innovative look and gameplay, Superhot’s minimalist graphics also mean it can play on a wide variety of Macs, with great performance even on our 2013 MBP.

System requirements: macOS 10.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Processor, 8 GB RAM, 1 GB graphics card or better, 5 GB hard drive space.

Our Criteria

Games have a largely subjective aspect to them. You may love some games, while we might prefer completely different ones. This is why we identified a set of criteria that every single one of our picks has to meet:

Native support: This should go without saying, but each and every one of the games mentioned here has to be officially supported on MacOS and does not require Bootcamp or Wine.

MacOS performance: There’s a plethora of reliable Windows-PC reviews, guides, and videos on the internet. However, they never acknowledge MacOS gaming. This is why our focus is always on the Mac performance of the games listed here.

Critical acclaim: Video games can be subjective, but to keep this guide as relevant as possible, we only consider proven games with positive reviews from both professional reviewers and average gamers.

Pricing: We all want quality, but pricing also plays an important role. We always keep in mind price tags and production value to give indies and AAA games equal chances. After all, we’re after games that are fun to play. Looks are important, but fun gameplay is even more so.

These recommendations are very busted because they don’t take into account the 32bit slaughter for anyone running macOS Catalina or newer.

Please update and just remove the ones that don’t run on the latest OS.

Hi Jer. That was indeed a problem for a long time. But earlier this year we updated virtually ALL games list to only include 64-bit games. But maybe we missed something. Did you spot a 32 bit game here?
