Resident Evil Village is now available for Mac

by | Sep 1, 2023

Resident Evil Village is finally available on Mac. It was released today, October 28, 2022, exclusively on the Mac App Store.

First revealed in June 2022 during Apple’s WWDC conference, Resident Evil Village was massive news for the entire Mac community. For starters, it is one of the biggest AAA games ever announced for macOS. Also, the reveal came from Capcom, the game’s developer, on stage at WWDC. This shows how important gaming has become to Apple and how easily it can convince developers to get on board. And the game is finally available on macOS.

Update: CAPCOM just confirmed that Resident Evil 4 is coming to Mac later this year.

Can you run Resident Evil Village on Mac?

We tested the game on our M1 Pro MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air and can confirm it runs great.

These are all the benchmark results we’ve gathered so far:

Apple and Capcom really did something truly special here. This is a perfect example of what Apple Silicon Macs are capable of, especially when games are properly optimized. This shouldn’t be a surprise, as both Apple and Capcom insisted heavily on the optimization that went into this game.

Jeremy Sandmel, GPU Software Director at Apple, shared these interesting tidbits about Village’s macOS version during the Resident Evil Showcase held earlier this month:

Resident Evil Village is the first project based on Capcon’s RE ENGINE to support the Mac and runs natively on Apple Silicon.

And since the game is optimized to take advantage of Metal 3 features like MetalFX Upscaling, gameplay is incredibly responsive with high frame rates and beautiful visuals. This means every Mac, from Macbook Air to Mac Studio will be able to play Resident Evil with ease.

Resident Evil Village Mac coverage

About Resident Evil Village: Why is it a big deal?

You may be wondering why there is so much hype around this announcement. There are two reasons why.

First, Resident Evil Village is an excellent game. It has been critically acclaimed by critics and gamers, and many consider it the best Resident Evil to date. Taking into account the long history and pedigree of the franchise, that means a lot. RE: Village currently has a 96% Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam from over 50,000 players. For the record, those are insane numbers.

Second, this is a big deal because convincing such a high-profile developer to port their game to macOS and reveal it during Apple’s WWDC conference (alongside No Man’s Sky and GRID Legends) means Apple can truly take Mac gaming to the next level if they decide to make it a priority.

This partnership could also show other developers how capable Macs have become in terms of graphics performance thanks to Apple Silicon.

Finally, bringing a Senior Apple director to Capcon’s RE showcase shows how closely together both companies are working. And if you paid close attention, Jeremy Sandmel did say, “Resident Evil Village is the first project based on Capcon’s RE ENGINE to support the Mac and runs natively on Apple Silicon.”

Is Resident Evil Village the start of a healthy partnership between Capcon and Apple, potentially bringing more Capcon games to macOS?
