Lies of P Now on Mac: M1 Native support & Benchmarks

by | Dec 30, 2023

So, two South Korean Studios, Neowiz Games and Round8 Studios, known for Android Gacha MMORPG games, decided to make a AAA Souls-like? The results were pretty unexpected. Lies of P was a shock fest, considering nobody expected Lies of P to hit all platforms, even macOS, on September 10, 2023. But how does this top-tier Action Mac game run on Macs?

Seemingly a blatant FromSoftware clone, Lies of P packs a punch with its impressive story, memorable cast, and characters. The game takes inspiration from many FromSoftware games, such as Dark Souls–putting a gritty and bleak twist on a children’s tale. The combat is aggressive and punishing, yet rewarding. And the best part is–you get to play it on a MacBook on launch!

Can You Play Lies of P on Mac?

You can absolutely play Lies of P on your Mac as it is supported natively across all Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2, M3). There’s no need for Rosetta 2 here, as Lies of P runs natively on ARM-based Macs using the Metal Graphics API.

With MetalFX Upscaling and Ray Tracing added into the mix, Mac gaming keeps getting better.  Unfortunately, this means there’s no support for Intel-based Macs this time around.

Can You Run Lies of P? Benchmarks & Performance

Lies of P is another great example of what Apple Silicon can achieve using their in-house Metal API. Now, with MetalFX Upscaling, players can crank their resolutions up to the maximum and get some extra eye candy–I mean blood, gore, and get up close and personal with marionettes.

Initially, we approached the game with a focus on stability and efficiency, opting for MetalFX Medium and medium to lowest quality presets. This decision was crucial in maintaining a consistent and enjoyable gaming experience for our audience.

Surprisingly, the game’s performance on the Mac mini M2 exceeded our expectations. In our post-game tests, we observed that on the lowest quality settings combined with MetalFX performance, the game could effortlessly maximize the screen refresh rate of 75Hz in certain areas. This level of performance was particularly impressive, considering the hardware specifications.

Looking ahead, we’re considering a 40fps cap with MetalFX Medium quality for future gameplay. This adjustment aims to strike a balance between visual fidelity and performance fluidity.

All-in-all, Lies of P is a fantastic port that makes great use of Apple Silicon, Metal API, and MetalFX Upscaling, just showing us what Apple MacBooks are capable of these days. However, Older games aren’t getting out of hand so easily. Intel-based games can still be run through Rosetta 2, provided you’ve got a higher-end Apple Silicon chip under the hood.

Lies of P on MacBook: Can It Run On A Base M1 MacBook Air?

You can easily run Lies of P on a MacBook, specifically the base M1 MacBook Air at a native 1080p resolution on medium to low settings. With native support for Metal API, and some sweet-sweet optimization, we finally got to play an incredible Souls-Like title on a literal MacBook Air.

Gone are the days when MacBooks were relegated to mere video editing, productivity tasks, or sitting on business tables. Apple is getting serious about gaming on macOS, and Metal 3 is proof of it. Getting a beefy title like Lies of P to run on a base M1 MacBook Air is phenomenal given the x64 ARM nature of the Apple Silicon chips. We’ve come a long way.
