UNTURNED on M1 Mac: Runs great on Apple Silicon

by | Jun 27, 2022

UNTURNED can run on M1 Macs via Rosetta 2.

[toc] At first glance, Unturned looks like a version of Roblox solely dedicated to the zombie survival game mode. With blocky people and cuboidal zombies, it looks quite boring. But Unturned is actually a fully fleshed-out zombie survival game.

Additionally, it can run at optimal speeds on almost any potato Mac computer. With solid performance on Mac and a nonexistent price tag, there’s no excuse for not checking this out.

As you can see below, the game is still written for Intel-based Macs, but thanks to Rosetta 2, UNTURNED can nonetheless run great on M1 Macs.

What is Rosetta 2? Rosetta 2 is a translation process that enables an M1 Mac with Apple silicon to use apps built for Intel-based Macs.

As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:

  • Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
  • 20-30 FPS: Borderline: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
  • 30-45 FPS: Playable: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
  • 45-60 FPS: Smooth: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
  • 60+ FPS: Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.

We usually aim for 30 FPS, because 30 FPS is enough to guarantee a smooth and fluid experience for most casual gamers.

UNTURNED Mac requirements

These are the game’s official Mac requirements:

Minimum Requirements
OS: High Sierra
Processor: 3.0 GHz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Hard Drive: 4 GB

⚠️ According to these system requirements, a Mac with integrated graphics should not be able to run it. But we can confirm it’s definitely possible.

UNTURNED on Mac: Verdict

When Unturned said they were a zombie survival game, they really meant it. Despite its simplistic graphics, Unturned has a realistic food and water consumption system. Forcing players to eventually grow their own food and obtain a stable water supply, because there’s only so much food and water left in the zombified cities.

Throw in some zombies, base building, and a skill leveling system, and Unturned becomes a pretty interesting game to play.

Additionally, Unturned supports online multiplayer crossplay and six massive locations to survive and thrive in, so a lack of content is the least of your worries. Unturned is free and easy to learn. So invite your friends and go beat up some zombies.
