Yes, Metro: Exodus runs on M1 Macs via Rosetta 2.
[toc] The third installment in the Metro Trilogy, Exodus is the best-looking and most enthralling Metro to date.
In Metro: Exodus, you’ll be finally able to flee the ruins of the Moscow Metro system and discover the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness. The game also features vast, non-linear levels, and a great storyline.

Metro: Exodus M1 Mac support
Yes, Metro: Exodus runs on M1 Macs with Apple Silicon via Rosetta 2.
Last Updated: Oct 30, 2021:
What is Rosetta 2? Rosetta 2 is a translation process that enables an M1 Mac with Apple silicon to use apps built for Intel-based Macs.
The game was tested on the following M1 Mac:
- 13-inch MacBook Air (2020): Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU, 8 GB RAM
As you can see below, the game is still exclusively written for Intel-based Macs, but thanks to Rosetta 2, Metro: Exodus can nonetheless run great on M1 Macs:
Tested versions:
- MacBook Air: MacOS Big Sur version 11.2.3
- Metro: Exodus: Version 0.2.00.61

As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:
- Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
- 20-30 FPS: Borderline: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
- 30-45 FPS: Playable: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
- 45-60 FPS: Smooth: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
- 60+ FPS: Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.
We usually aim for 30 FPS, because 30 FPS is enough to guarantee a smooth and fluid experience for most casual gamers.

I’m running Metro Exodus at the highest setting (Extreme) on my MacBook M1 Max w. 32 cores and 64GB RAM: the game runs super-smoothly and it looks stunning: it’s also a brilliant game, with exactly the mix of atmosphere, characters and action that I love. I’ve not had the resolution above 1080p, but I’ve never gamed at higher than 1080p anyway. One weird thing: at Medium settings (the default it chose for me), the game ran like a bag of spanners. Turning up the settings to max totally fixed it, weirdly.
On higher resolutions/graphics quality, computational burden shifts to the GPU—from the CPU. That’s the phenomena you’ve noticed.
i.e. Less burdened by Rosetta 2 overhead.
Richard, thanks for the tip to run at Ultra settings. I would not have thought that changing from Medium to Ultra would change the performance of the game from unplayable to super smooth but it did! Also, the game kept crashing until I selected the “Scale to fit below build-in camera” property on the app.
No. If you look online you will see that lots of people are seeing the game crash at startup.
On my i7 Mac, the game crashes on start-up.
I should add, I then moved to a Windows machine. Exodus is one of the best FPS I have played. Brilliant.
It runs perfect on my M1 Macbook Pro with external monitor. I bought it on Steam, after install, it took a long while to boot up the first time, like it was still setting up files. However, after 20 minutes or so I cam back to the game an it booted right up. The default recommended setting for mine was Medium resolution which looks great and plays very smooth.
