Diablo 3 on M1 Mac: Can it run on Apple Silicon Processors?

by | May 14, 2022

Diablo 3 can run on M1 Macs via Rosetta 2.

[toc] Diablo 3 is an action RPG from Blizzard. But more than that, it’s the latest entry in the genre-defining Diablo series.

Diablo practically invented loot-based games and Diablo 3 further perfected the addictive formula of hacking and slashing your way to more and better loot.

Diablo 3 M1 Mac support

We tested the game on our M1 Macs and can confirm Apple Silicon Macs can perfectly run Diablo 3, even better than Intel Macs.

Diablo 3 running on M1 Mac 2

Blizzard was quick to implement the Metal API early on, but unfortunately, they haven’t been as quick to implement native M1 support. Still, thanks to Rosetta 2, Diablo 3 runs great on M1 Macs, even the game is still coded for Intel Macs.

What is Rosetta 2? Rosetta 2 is a translation process that enables an M1 Mac with Apple silicon to use apps built for Intel-based Macs.

Diablo 3 M1 Mac benchmarks

These are the Diablo 3 M1 benchmarks we have gathered so far. Notice we had to use the in-game FPS counter to evaluate performance levels (more of that below):

GameMachineResolutionSettingsFPSTesterTested
Diablo 3💻 M1 MacBook Air 13", 7-core GPU, 8 GB2560x1600Medium40Mac Gamer HQ7/7/2021
Diablo 3💻 M1 MacBook Air 13", 7-core GPU, 8 GB1440x900High75Mac Gamer HQ7/7/2021

As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:

  • Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
  • 20-30 FPS: Borderline: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
  • 30-45 FPS: Playable: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
  • 45-60 FPS: Smooth: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
  • 60+ FPS: Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.

We usually aim for 30 FPS, because 30 FPS is enough to guarantee a smooth and fluid experience for most casual gamers.

How to view FPS in Diablo 3?

Diablo 3 is one of those games that can show you Frames Per Second (FPS) by simply pressing Control + R. This will allow you to reliably test different settings and resolution combinations.

Tested versions:

  • MacBook Air: MacOS Big Sur version 11.1
  • OS: macOS Big Sur version 11.4
  • Diablo 3: 2.7.0 (74291)

Diablo 3 on Mac: Verdict

Developed by Blizzard, Diablo 3 is yet another example of a Mac port done right. Just like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, Diablo 3 on Mac features everything the Windows version does. And includes cross-platform multiplayer and Metal support. Diablo Immortal may be the new kid on the block, but considering the amount it criticism it received due to its predatory monetization practices, Diablo 3 remains the best Diablo game to play on  a Mac.

Bottom line: If you’re even remotely interested in action-RPGs or looter-based games, you simply owed it yourself to give Diablo 3 a shot:

I am using a mac studio, with 2 external monitors. I just want to play the game with one screen, but everytime i launch the game it uses the two monitors. Any one knows how to set this to one monitor only? besides disconnecting the other monitor?
