The Workplace Relations Minister said: "We need our health and safety system to be clear, to be understandable, and to be effective. I want our system to make sure businesses are focused on addressing the things that are causing workers harm and not on compliance that serves no purpose." Do you think this is true? Health and Safety Law in NZ was not fit for purpose under the Health and Safety in Employment Act, it did not take Robens Law far enough. Is this the case though under HSWA? The Royal Commission into Pike River findings are worth reading, in particular those on reform and the explanation of Robens Law https://lnkd.in/gxUYTdYf Watch this space as I have decided to bring you a series on the history of Health and Safety Law.

IATSE (Various Film Unions) is focused on raising wages in a way that will address recent inflation and on enforcing its preexisting contract language (it’s seeking, for instance, to dissuade signatories from allegedly subcontracting covered work). The union also wants to make strides in changing working conditions for members, at least in part by increasing financial penalties incurred for “overworking” members, in the words of the union. And just like the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA did during their fraught 2023 negotiations, the union will be fighting to put guardrails on the use of AI “to protect behind-the-scenes workers’ jobs and creative works, data/privacy, and their safety,” as IATSE stated on X on March 7. https://lnkd.in/eGjMBneT

The Principles for Worker-Driven Remedy offer a framework for making remedy a reality for workers when their rights are violated and when they are harmed in global supply chains. Developed by Electronics Watch in consultation with trade unions, labour rights organizations, and public buyers, the Principles put affected workers at the heart of the remedy process. #modernslavery #remedy #ILO #ESG #forcedlabour #UNGP #procurement #supplychains
