Highlighting an importance of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage & the need for reforms in this space. โThe State Heritage Register contains only a small number of Aboriginal sites recognised as having state heritage significance, as stipulated under the Heritage Act. In contrast, the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 includes Aboriginal Place Declarations, such as Bulgandry, Mooney Mooney, and Finchley, which provide an additional layer of legal protection to sites of significant importance. In New South Wales, there are more than 110,000 sites and objects listed in the AHIMS database, but only 135 sites have received Aboriginal Place Declarations. Shoalhaven Local Government Area (LGA), a region renowned for its stunning landscapes, there are over 600 European heritage sites registered. In comparison, the region only boasts a mere 3 Cultural heritage sites. The State Heritage Register boasts over 1,300 listings related to colonial heritage, while local governments have more than 40,000 registered Local Government Heritage Items. This situation highlights a lack of government support and resources for Aboriginal cultural heritage, resulting in insufficient proactive efforts to increase the number of Aboriginal Places Declared. Moreover, designating these sites as Aboriginal places makes it considerably more challenging to impact or destroy themโ #Aboriginal #Cultural #Heritage #Aboriginalculturalheritage

This afternoon Australasian Women in Emergencies Network (AWE) organised and hosted the event - 'Our Community, Our Voice: Migrant and refugees womenโs experiences of urban flood'. Wennie van Riet (GenWest) was the guest speaker sharing insight into the experiences of migrants and refugees during the 2022 Maribyrnong flood in Victoria, Australia. Key points and recommendations shared included: - Why response needs to be localised, gendered and intersectionalised. - Climate changes greatest victims are women and girls. - People are often in survival mode trying to focus on their homes and managing insurance post disaster; canโt necessarily consider mental health support as it can be interpreted as a luxury during that period. - Recognised information gaps as people can be unsure what organisations offer and in relevant languages. - Using activities such as rebuilding gardens post floods to develop community and resilience. - Ensuring cultural appropriate activities; e.g. timing so that people can attend. - Preparedness including early warning systems, financial and housing, health and wellbeing, safety, support systems, community resilience and preparing for the future. - In some areas people arenโt aware that the area theyโre living in is a flood plain. From this, wanting to develop more awareness and community support for action. - Many people donโt have insurance for flood cover, as in some countries of origin for migrants and refugees, it was not something relevant or available. - Some people didnโt want to leave the area they were living in as they couldnโt communicate in English, so attending emergency housing wasnโt effective. - Increased robberies in affected areas post disaster. - During disaster and after women experience increased rates of violence. - Recommend that all disaster preparedness include family violence specialists. - Recommendation to consider children and education to ensure that trauma isnโt continued in this space. - Recommend promoting community cohesion as often needs arenโt met during aid support, sometimes what is given is what is available or provided based on a perceived need. - Migrant and refugee communities are often invisible. - Challenge for migrant and refugee people is that the first few years of living in a new country is that people are preoccupied getting established with placing children into school, finding employment, learning the language and making connections. Preparedness for something which may not happen isnโt often a priority for people. #AWE #awe #australasianwomeninemergenciesnetwork #women #gender #genderinemergencies #womeninemergencies #intersectionality #emergencyresponse #emergencymanagement #emergencypreparedness #disastermanagement #disasterresponse #disasterriskreduction #disasterresilience #disasterpreparedness #climatechangeadaptation #climatechangeresilience #climatechange #floods https://lnkd.in/gVxUbwFf

๐ฑWhy is Country important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? ๐To begin to understand the importance of Country to First Nation people, we have to grasp that the term means so much more than land, earth, sea, or sky โ Country isnโt close to the nouns we use in English. ๐Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures live in harmony with the world around them, placing great value on Country not just as land but as the foundation of Indigenous people, past, present, and future. ๐ซฑ๐พ๐ซฒ๐ปWhen we begin to form a better understanding of Country and the complexity of this term for First Nations people, we take crucial steps towards Reconciliation and fostering understanding and unity. #ReconciliationAustralia #PracticalReconciliation #AllyTraining #actionsforallies #culturalawareness

People choose to migrate The house choose to stay Does it have a say? Abandoned Ancestral Homes: The Cost of Immigration for Prosperity ๐๏ธ๐ Immigration has long been a pathway for individuals seeking better opportunities and a brighter future. However, this pursuit of prosperity often comes at a cost, leaving behind ancestral homes that stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. These homes, once filled with life and cherished memories, now lay abandoned, unattended, and in a dilapidated condition. The deterioration is evident in broken window glasses, moss-ed walls, and corridors that long for visitors, painting a poignant picture of the impact of immigration on these ancestral abodes. As loved ones depart in search of greener pastures, ancestral homes are left behind, bearing the weight of neglect and fading memories. Broken windows, shattered by time and weather, allow the elements to seep in, leaving the interiors vulnerable to decay. The walls, once adorned with family portraits and vibrant colors, now bear the marks of neglect, with peeling paint and cracks that tell tales of abandonment. Corridors, once bustling with laughter and footsteps, now echo with emptiness, longing for the warmth of visitors who have moved on. These dilapidated homes serve as a silent reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of prosperity. They stand as testaments to the resilience and determination of those who left, seeking better lives for themselves and their families. While their departure may have brought success and opportunities, the ancestral homes left behind bear the weight of their absence, silently yearning for the love and care they once received. The deterioration of ancestral homes highlights the importance of preserving our heritage and the memories they hold. These homes are not merely physical structures but repositories of family history, traditions, and cultural identity. They connect us to our roots and provide a sense of belonging. Efforts should be made to restore and revive these homes, not only for their architectural significance but also to honor the legacy of those who came before us. #heritagetimesin #historicpreservation #kako #saveourheritage #jehanabad #reelitfeelit
