This thursday 5th of Octobre the study night at Howest - Digital Arts and Entertainment - The Level has the extra special theme of 🎮 Baldur's Gate 3, made by Larian Studios. During the evening we also review student portfolios and give some extra 💡 hints and tips to students to make their portfolio standout among other contenders in preparation for the Unwrap festival (https://www.unwrap.be/) next week (12 and 13 octobre) that also features a career and internship fair. Advice that I collected over the years, specifically for the more technical students: ⭐ Make it clear what role you would like to fill in the game studio. Don't present yourself as an all rounder who would do anything. ⭐ If you add group work to your portfolio, make it clear what your role was in the team, and highlight some of your accomplishments. People skills are important, so when talking to companies also discuss how you cooperate with other people and how you deal with different takes on the technical development of a game. ⭐ Course work is fine, but make it clear what the starting point was and do try to make it different from other students. ⭐ Show what makes you tick with work that was not in the study program. ⭐ Link to github if it makes sense and if your code is polished enough to read. Don't worry if there are areas that need improvement, as long as you can discuss how you would improve these areas. Today marks my two year anniversary with Universal Technical Institute- Austin! In these short two years we have opened a brand new campus and brought 4 programs to the Austin market. We’ve connected with over 100 employer partners, hosted 5 job fair events (not including in between recruitment and student events), and promoted over 5,000 job opportunities to our student body. We’ve hosted our grand opening ceremony and invited friends, politicians, and community leaders to our campus. We’ve held open houses, future student workshop events, high school educators and chamber of commerce personnel, women in STEM, Summer Ignite, and many other campus events! We’ve hosted over a dozen new student orientations and helped over 1,000 students in multiple areas including employment, community resources, and problem-solving to ensure they make it to the finish line. We’ve held 6 graduation ceremonies and graduated over 250 students. We’ve employed over 150 of those graduates, and continue providing in field job opportunities to those still searching. I have managed to build a powerhouse dream team while running TWO departments and creating systems to increase our efficiencies. All while testing out a lean model (half the staff members in comparison to other campuses, 5 team members total to be exact). All in all…it’s been a busy, but successful two year journey if I do say so myself. Today I celebrate all that has been, and offer a “cheers”to all that will be! I open my arms and welcome new opportunities, growth, and happiness. “This is 10% luck 20% skill 15% concentrated power of will 5% pleasure 50% pain And 100% reason to remember the name” Cheers!

It’s that time of the year when most students give up on finding an internship… 😭 Don’t let that stop you from getting your dream role. We’re here to share that it is still very possible for you to get a summer internship! Here some things we recommend: 1. Go to all the career fairs in your community (for example, hit up NYC networking events if you can make a small day trip) 📚 2. Join the Product Haven Slack to see what companies are still recruiting 👀 (comment “Slack” to be added) 3. Apply to roles outside of your specific niche 👩🏻💻 4. Practice by doing or watching mock interviews. One of the best youtube channels for mocks is Exponent! 🗣️ Follow Product Haven to stay updated on what we have coming in the next few months!

You know that feeling of child-like excitement and anticipation leading up to a birthday or vacation? That’s exactly how I feel about one of my favorite events of the year: MIT Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP)'s Team Training Workshop. Sadly, I wasn’t able to make it this year, but my passion for this event and all it has to offer still remains. For those who aren’t familiar, MIT UPOP’s Team Training Workshop is an annual event designed to help students in the UPOP program hone their leadership skills through workshops, activities and hands-on learning opportunities, all culminating in a career fair at the end of the week-long program. It’s also a week I refer to as my “annual refresher” where I have the opportunity to connect with students, model the power of teamwork and even learn a little bit myself. Through the years, this event has deepened my love for mentoring in ways I never could have imagined. It's given me a chance to connect with each student on an individual level and work with them to craft their own career game plan. While the entire week is filled with amazing moments of learning and growth, the real cherry on top is their beaming faces after they nail their elevator pitch at the career fair. I’m always left in awe of the incredible talent these students possess—and that all they really need is a vote of confidence and a little push to get them going, and then they’re set. Having served on the advisory board for multiple years, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of such a transformative program. I also want to thank all the dedicated staff who go to great lengths to organize the event each year, as well as the mentors who always bring their A-game, especially Mariquita Blumberg, Ed Kessing, Andrew Sommer, Betsy Boyle, Tim Dove and Reza Rahaman. I’ll always be UPOP’s biggest fan and can’t wait to see all the greatness still to come through this program.
