🚀🚀Bridging the gap between Black Youth seeking of opportunities and Black-led startups in need of skilled talent. In February during our inaugural "Power of Community" event, I moderated a “Talent and Mentorship” panel where we shared so much insight on how to bridge the skills gap and equip our community with the right tools to compete in the workforce. As a Founder of a talent acquisition firm, Okwera Recruitment and Okwera Academy (a dynamic organization focused on equipping youths of African descent with the career-launching skills hrough interactive skills workshops, mentorship programs, upskilling courses/ certifications, project-based learning, networking events, industry talks, many more), this topic is close to my heart! ❤️So months following this discussion, we turned those insights and ideas into actionable solutions that will truly make a difference in our community! I'm proud and honoured to have been taking the lead at Black Founders Network in our inaugural Black Career Advancement Program funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Citizenship & Multiculturalism and their Black Youth Action Plan (BYAP) which works towards eliminating systemic, race-based disparities by increasing opportunities for Black youth across the province. 🌟 What's the Program All About? 🌟 This program is designed to offer tailored employment readiness support to empower Black youth with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate diverse career pathways. At the same time, we're working hard to fill the talent gaps that Black-led companies in our ecosystem have been facing. But that's not all! We're not just connecting Black youth to opportunities; we're also putting money where our mouth is by providing crucial financial support. How? By creating up to 20 work placements for Black youths, and we're doing this by subsidizing talent acquisition costs for 20 Black founders within the BFN community. That's 20 incredible chances for our young talents to kickstart their careers, right here in our vibrant community!👏🏽👏🏽 📣 Connect to Exciting Opportunities! 📣 Over the next few weeks, we'll be unveiling a series of job opportunities by the founders. Many of these are entry-level positions, ideal for those who are just starting out on their career journey across various industries. 💼💼Join the talent network here so you don’t miss out on these opportunities: https://lnkd.in/gMeQjAWz 🔎🔎You can also explore the latest opportunities on our BFN Job Board: https://lnkd.in/gvf2zaKU 🚀🚀For founders, you can register to add your company to our job board here: https://lnkd.in/gR-favjq #skillsdevelopment #byap #BFNCommunity #blackentrepreneurs #inclusivehiring

Strategic Partnerships Lead at Primary Talent Partners | Passionate about HR Consulting | Contingent Labor Solutions Management | Diversity, Equity & Inclusion | Staffing Industry
Please take a moment to read the post below from our Executive Partner Chad Douglas from Primary Talent Partners. I share this core value and it is the “WHY” behind my joining the company. We must remove the systemic inequalities that exist in our workforce. We all have a role in this and together we can affect the change required. #diversitymatters
Thank you, Bryan Peña, CCWP from Defiant Solutions LLC, for nominating me to share my origin story for Primary Talent Partners (PTP). PTP’s mission to increase Black STEM worker representation in the contingent workforce is deeply rooted in my personal journey and convictions, one that may seem unexpected given my background as a "pickup truck-driving white male" from the deep South. I grew up in a small town in South Carolina, where I was a minority in a predominantly Black community. Despite our differences, race was never a barrier among us; we were friends, sharing the same socioeconomic background and supporting each other. However, as I entered the workforce and witnessed my Black friends' careers seemingly stall compared to mine, I began to question the role of race in these disparities. In 1998, I met Tinisha Bookhart, PMP, CSM , who is now my partner. Through our relationship, I gained profound insights into the biases and challenges faced by Black STEM workers in the workplace. I discovered that Black STEM workers are the most underrepresented demographic in the workforce, and this realization fueled my determination to challenge the systems perpetuating this inequality. My passion for increasing Black worker representation stems from these life experiences—growing up in a diverse community, witnessing disparities in career trajectories, and gaining firsthand understanding through my relationship with Tinisha. I found myself asking the question "How can I, someone who has clearly benefited from an uneven playing field, celebrate my professional successes when I've had an unfair advantage?" When we formed PTP, we decided to make increasing Black STEM worker representation one of our core missions…and we are happy with what we’ve accomplished. To help solve this generational challenge of underrepresentation, we use a % of revenue from every hour we bill our clients to fund scholarships for students enrolled in HBCU partner schools. These scholarships help increase graduation rates and ensure more Black STEM workers are entering the workforce. Additionally, we fund macro internships for our scholars that include up to 200 hours with one of our many Fortune 500 clients who engage our program. Through these internships, our scholars gain valuable work experience that leads to an average of 30% higher starting salaries compared to graduates with no work experience. That’s my origin story in less than the 3000 characters Linkedin gives me to tell it. I’m excited to nominate my friend Wen, and someone I met recently at Procurecon, Aaron Jenkins, to share their origin stories for the next Throwback Thursday. #throwbackthursday, #defiantoriginstory

Sherri Brooks is back with our latest #BehindTheData! This week, we're delving into how we're engaging and retaining a crucial part of our community – young Black men (male-identifying participants who identify as Black/African American). Our engagement with young Black men showed that their average number of mentoring sessions was 17% lower than their counterparts, and retention into senior year significantly lagged. ‼️There's room for improvement‼️ This year, we're doubling down on efforts to not just recruit but also ensure young Black men stay and thrive in Summer Search. Our action plan includes: ✅ Conducting focus groups with young Black men to directly address their needs and improve engagement. ✅ Tailoring mentorship and support to increase retention rates, especially through critical transition years. ✅ Enhancing our programming to better meet the unique challenges and opportunities our young Black men face. At Summer Search, our commitment to young Black men goes beyond just numbers. It's about ensuring every participant feels seen, supported, and empowered through every phase of their journey with us. Next week, Sherri will examine how Summer Searchers are thriving! But first, check out this week’s video and blog. https://lnkd.in/esZGS6ZD #SummerSearch #SummerSearcherMade #SummerSearchersHaveNoCeilings #mondaymotivation #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackFutures #YouthDevelopment
