NET CALL- NET CALL. BLUF: Did you participate in a DoD-SkillBridge internship with a federal agency, that led to you being hired with the federal government? If so, read on...
As part of an upcoming job fair, a partner agency would like to highlight the SkillBridge program within the federal government, by having informal "testimonials" playing on a loop in the sitting area, and I'm sure they would like more than just my own 🤣.
I'm looking for a couple of people who completed a DoD-SkillBridge internship to share their story. The intent would be a quick, informal, 15-60 second video of you speaking about your experience and how it facilitated your transition from the uniformed to civilian service. These videos wouldn't be used for any other purpose without prior written approval by you.
Reach out if you're interested, and I can send you additional info, the recommended topics, questions, etc. --Brock

This is Pedro, the robot my team and I worked on during my internship at Hill Air Force Base! In the future, Pedro will be used at job fairs and conventions to help recruit new employees for the base. He utilizes machine learning to recognize voices and provide appropriate responses to frequently-asked questions.
During my time on this project, I was primarily responsible for two tasks:
1. Creating the network connection between the robot’s hardware and a controller tablet.
2. Testing ideas for a new neural network paradigm that is more capable of working with real-time, continuous inputs and taking conversational context into account.
I was also able to improve my skills in coordinating with team members to make progress towards a goal, which is especially valuable in technical settings.

Today, I had the privilege of attending the 2024 STEM Career and Internship Fair at UC Santa Cruz.
Engaging with recruiters and delving into discussions about potential job opportunities was an enriching experience.
One proactive step I took prior to the event was applying for relevant positions in advance. By doing so, I ensured that recruiters had access to my resume and pertinent information, facilitating seamless conversations and maximizing the impact of our interactions.
As I reflect on this experience, I recognize the importance of further proactive measures to enhance future career fair engagements. What other strategies do you recommend for maximizing the effectiveness of these events? Let's continue the discussion!

The work expected in education by educators and leaders has become more crucial. Schools are hubs in communities. And as resources and supports are inequitably distributed, available, accessible in communities, schools are important institutions for students and families.

Yesterday I took part in a careers fair at my kids school where I spent 90 minutes talking about my career in IT and answering questions from the children in year 5 & 6.
The groups were split into 10 - 15 children at a time and by the 8th group I had my pitch down to a fine art.
The most popular questions were:
Q)What’s your favourite place to travel to with work?
A)India I think and fortunately I’m back there in a couple of weeks!
Q)Who’s your favourite F1 driver?
A)Official answer = Lewis Hamilton but the Hexagon line is anyone driving for Red Bull Racing
Q)What’s your favourite Greggs Pasty? A)Sausage and Bean melt no contest it’s the god tier bakery treat.
Q)What do you earn?
A)Enough to have a nice house, a nice car and the occasional nice holiday 😆
Some of my favourite questions though were: Why do you like working in IT? What do you do in a normal day and when did you decide what you wanted to do when you grew up?
All great questions but the thing that really struck me was how eager the kids were to ask questions. There wasn’t one group where the questions didn’t flow and I was forced to fill the time (and people who know me well know how much I hate awkward silence and tend to babble to try and fill it). Refreshingly all kids engaged and asked questions and thankfully seemed interested in my reply! Gave me lots of hope for the future and made me think about how as a real life grown up I can learn from the engagement those kids showed in the sessions yesterday!

To make navigation easier for students, all exhibitor information and their fair stall locations will be available on the #MyFuture app in advance. You can view a digital floor plan, locate stalls of interest, and click on the companies to find out more information. What are you waiting for?
Once at the fair, remember:
⭐ Meet as many employers as possible.
⭐Keep an open mind - you are not limited to working in jobs directly related to your degree subject.
⭐ Graduate opportunities exist in a range of industries, and many are open to students of any degree.
⭐Don't be limited by 'Graduate Schemes' or Graduate programmes' - remember, some companies call it 'early career hires,' 'junior professional roles,' 'entry-level jobs,' or even 'training contracts.'
