2023 has been a great year for Ascent, with several important milestones reached - including our 100th Military Aviation Ground School (MAGS) class back in April. As part of our celebrations, we asked members of our very first class to share tips for Class 100. Flt Lt Matt Kenealy, 72(F) Sqn, was part of the very first Ascent MAGS class at #RAFCranwell. He became a Qualified Flying Instructor in 2022 and is now passing his knowledge on to future aviators. So, what advice did he have for MAGS Class 100? “The most important thing on any flying training course is to help each other out, sharing your mistakes, strengths and weaknesses to make everyone better. You learn the most from each other,” he said. “The end of flying training may seem like a long time away... but being on a course is the most enjoyable time that you will have, so try and take it one step at a time.” Read more: https://ow.ly/Z1Vb50QhMma

The Boeing Stearman, also known as the Stearman Model 75, is a biplane designed in the 1930s by the Stearman Aircraft Company, which was later acquired by Boeing in 1934. The Stearman Model 75 was primarily used as a military trainer aircraft during World War II, where it gained widespread popularity and recognition. Here are some key points about the Boeing Stearman: Design and Development: The Stearman Model 75 was designed by Lloyd Stearman in the early 1930s. It was a conventional biplane design with tandem seating for the instructor and the trainee pilot. The aircraft featured an open cockpit design and a rugged construction suitable for military training. Military Service: During World War II, the Boeing Stearman served as a primary training aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and the United States Navy (USN), as well as other air forces around the world. It was used to train thousands of military pilots in basic flight skills, aerobatics, and instrument flying. Variants: The Boeing Stearman had several variants, including the PT-13, PT-17, and PT-18, which were used by the USAAF, and the N2S series, which were used by the US Navy. These variants differed mainly in engine type and minor design variations. Post-War Use: After World War II, many surplus Stearman aircraft were sold to civilian owners and operators. They were used for various purposes, including crop dusting, aerobatics, airshows, and as personal recreational aircraft. Enduring Legacy: Despite being designed in the 1930s, the Boeing Stearman remains a popular aircraft among aviation enthusiasts and collectors. Many restored Stearman biplanes are still flying today, and they are often seen at airshows and vintage aircraft gatherings. Specifications: The specifications of the Boeing Stearman PT-17, one of the most common variants, include a wingspan of 32 feet 2 inches, a length of 24 feet 9 inches, and a maximum speed of around 124 mph. My first flying assignment after US Air Force pilot training was as an instructor pilot at pilot training, the program I had just graduated from. Honest truth? I WAS NOT happy about it. Why? My ego…yep, that’s what I said…my ego. I had just completed one year of intense flying training, with the last 6 months training in the T-38, the Air Forces twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer. I had been training to go fly a fighter jet, but that was not what the Air Force wanted me to do. They wanted me to teach. I had my quick pity party and then I decided to embrace the job the Air Force had assigned me. I LOVED it! This is where I learned that I was meant to teach. This experience taught me that our preconceived notions of success can sometimes cloud our judgment. Teaching became a passion for me, unlocking countless moments of simple, yet intense gratitude from those I had the privilege to help. It's a reminder that aligning our personal definition of success with external expectations can limit our ability to make a powerful impact right where we are. In the end, our journeys might take unexpected turns, but embracing them with an open mind can lead to unexpected joys and fulfillment. After all, success isn't about the spotlight; it's about the meaningful impact we make. #EmbraceTheUnexpected #JourneyToSuccess

It's almost a week since the flying community received the devastating news that the senior VP of AOPA , Richard McSpadden, had died in a crash in the upper state New York. Before joining the Air Safety Institute, McSpadden was a former commander of the USAF Thunderbirds demonstration team. As a private pilot you share the sky and airspace with so many others, both private and commercial flights. But, the training and equipment preflights checklists are much the same. It is designed to stay ahead and prepare you for the entire steps, from the planning phases, starting procedures, taxi, departure, the actual flight, arrivals and landing, taxi, coming to a complete stop. For me, I always check myself, am I fit to fly today? I would say that my passion for flying also have helped me in my work, in my profession ☑️Do you see the whole picture ☑️Is the equipment/solution certified to meet all standards that it is aimed for ☑️Has anything changed since previous time ☑️Are you maintaining the equipment according to the aircraft maintenance ☑️What if anything unusual and unexpected occurs? ❗️The <WHAT-IF> mantra should always be in the back of your head❗️ ⚠️ ALWAYS have a plan B and a plan C There are so many good ways a pilot can stay updated and to learn from others. Online/social communities, forums, word of mouth from fellow aviators. Did you know that the first airport ever was not a single, definitive location, but rather a gradual evolution of designated areas for aircraft takeoff and landing The earliest "airports" were simply open fields or spaces with relatively smooth surfaces and predictable winds, such as racetracks, golf courses, or prairies. Examples include Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina where the Wright brothers flew, and Huffman Prairie near Dayton, Ohio where they conducted further tests. The first permanent, dedicated airfields were established in Germany in 1910 for the Zeppelin airships. By 1914, Delag's airship airports had handled almost 34,000 passengers on 1,600 flights. The first recorded use of an airport in the modern sense was in 1909 at College Park Airport in Maryland, USA. It was established by the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a training ground for military pilots. The first airport with scheduled commercial flights was Hounslow Heath Aerodrome near London, which began operations in August 1919. So while there is no single definitive "first airport", the evolution of designated airfields for aviation began in the early 1900s, with the College Park Airport often cited as the first airport in the modern sense.
