❤️ WHAT AN INCREDIBLE EVENT we had yesterday in a London private members club with a select, very VIP group of entrepreneurs 👉 ranging from business scaling experts, property tech and cloud tech ventures, not to mention a reinsurance company. They were all ambitious enough to want to enter the world of capital raising in Monaco 🇲🇨! Raising in public, 86 days to go: we have another commitment 🎉🔥 Every week, I share a weekly update of Mane Hook-Up's funding round on Substack and LinkedIn as I try to close the round in 240 days. Why? Because we always hear about how much companies have raised, not how they got there. As always, a huge thank you to the people who supported or checked up on me last week: Tom Greenwood 🌎, Brian AM Williams, Neda Sahebelm, Patricia W. and Cecily Motley 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀 🎉 Commitment from a Board member of a global Black hair & beauty brand 😇 2x great Angel calls and 2x warm intros to funds 🚀 Made it to the next stage for a start-up program and in conversation with an accelerator 🎟 Attended Fabrik's community leader launch event 🛠 Finally finished working on a Founders Fundraising Toolkit I started reaching out to Senior Executives working in the Black hair industry, knowing they would understand and care about the problem Mane Hook-Up is solving. Four weeks later, we have a commitment from one of them, which is a huge win. (P.S. I'm proud to say, this was the result of cold email outreach 🥳) 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 😞 Email deliverability took a hit Cold emails have played a huge role in helping me find and book calls with potential investors. However, I didn't prioritise doing all of the maintenance I should have and now our deliverability has taken a dip. Luckily, I've started using a tool called Warmy to tackle the issue and our deliverability has already crept back up. This was a not-so-gentle reminder that I need to prioritise email admin! Check out the newsletter for tool recommendations to manage this problem if you've experienced it as well. 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 💛 3x things have drastically improved my pitch ✨Improving my deck: each round of revisions has helped me to fine-tune my message and answer the most important questions upfront. ✨ Memorising my script: I have about 3-4 bullet points per slide to keep the conversation on track (highly recommend if you don't already have this). ✨ Time to practice: the more investors I speak to, the easier it is for me to understand what they're looking for and the parts of our story that resonates with them. More on this in the newsletter, but if I could go back in time, I would give myself more grace at the beginning of the journey to make mistakes at the beginning. It's all part of the learning process and, if you're paying attention, it can only get better. This week has been a whirlwind of pitching and getting everything ready for a big moment that's just around the corner: next week we're rolling out our public beta! 🚀 Pitching Our Heart Out: I've been out there every day this week with Daniel, meeting with Angel Investor and VCs, including some of the top names in Switzerland, to spread the word about our vision. Securing funding for our seed round is our top priority. With every pitch, we're getting sharper. It's all about networking, learning from each pitch session, and moving even faster. 📈 The Big Leap - Public Beta Launch: The night from Monday to Tuesday ushers in a new era with our public beta unveiling. Following last year's closed beta, we've refined our focus on benefits and experiences, streamlining based on the feedback received. This launch is just the start, embodying our 'Build in Public' ethos for ongoing improvement. Watch for our roadmap on Monday, detailing the features set to enhance our 90-day journey. ✍ Reflecting on the Journey: The excitement in our team is off the charts. We've put our all into getting here, and the idea of showing you what we've made has us all buzzing. We're super pumped to keep going, to keep building. We're all about making benefits and experiences easy to get through NFTs, and changing how we connect with brands, communities, and games. It's a big deal for us, and we're just getting started. In a market that seemed stacked against them, our alumni have raised €114,837,962 in 2023. While many factors are at play, we noticed there are two aspects of our programme that, when used wisely, have paid off the best. Yet, most founders don’t even know about them. 1️⃣  Driving your process timeline Investors have been notoriously sluggish in decision-making. Why wouldn’t they? The market is slow and they can afford to wait. It actually works in their favour. By delaying the process, they get two clear advantages: a chance to check that founders deliver on their targets as they said they would. And the benefit of founders growing more desperate and thus agreeing to less favourable terms (as if the market crashing wouldn't be enough of a problem). Thankfully, our Bootcampers knew better than to budge and took charge of their timelines. With the tricks and techniques we teach in the programme, they knew exactly what to communicate to investors and how to nudge them to move on their previously set timeline. 2️⃣ Deal Dynamics It's tricky for a founder to negotiate a good deal when the market seems to be crashing around their head, with investors always having the upper hand. Our alumni were ready to deal with this. They knew precisely when to hold back, disclose information, negotiate better terms, and use information asymmetry and scarcity to build FOMO to their advantage. It's not pretty out there, but they managed to negotiate dirty terms out and closed deals on their terms by understanding how VCs think and how to play their game.
