While Higgason has decades of experience in education, she’s the first to admit the idea of using everyday items to teach physics came from an AI-powered teaching assistant called Khanmigo for Teachers, a pilot program introduced last year by Khan Academy, the non-profit online educational organization started in 2008 by Sal Khan with a mission to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Today at Microsoft Build, Microsoft and Khan Academy announced a new partnership that aims to bring these time-saving and lesson-enhancing AI tools to millions of educators. By donating access to Azure AI-optimized infrastructure, Microsoft is enabling Khan Academy to offer all K-12 educators in the U.S. free access to the pilot of Khanmigo for Teachers, which will now be powered by Azure OpenAI Service. The two companies will also collaborate to explore opportunities to improve AI tools for math tutoring in an affordable, scalable and adaptable way with a new version of Phi-3, a family of small language models (SLMs) developed by Microsoft. “I use Khanmigo to spice up my classroom to make it fun and engaging,” said Higgason. For example, in another class of Higgason’s, Khanmigo suggested explaining net ionic equations by asking students if they’ve ever been to a dance party, comparing ions to dancers who change partners.   Besides offering creative lesson plans, Khanmigo provides an array of AI-powered suggestions and teacher tools that relieve teachers of many of the administrative burdens that contribute to teacher burnout. With a click of an onscreen dashboard, in just a few minutes and often less, teachers can generate custom lesson plans, suggest student groupings, or “level” up or down text passages for learners who are either struggling or need more of a challenge. Used together, Khan Academy estimates these tools can save teachers an average of five working hours each week. “Teachers are super overworked,” said Sal Khan, noting record numbers of teachers are leaving the profession. School districts in underserved areas have been especially hard hit, with teachers citing low pay and unmanageable workloads exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic as some of the top reasons they are giving up on teaching. Using AI for education isn’t just a powerful way to potentially help accelerate student learning, said Khan, it’s also a way “to make teaching more sustainable.” While earning rave reviews from teachers like Higgason since it launched in March 2023, Khanmigo previously cost teachers $4 per month. The fees covered the cost of developing and testing the new ... As part of the new partnership, Khan Academy’s teacher tools will now be powered by Azure OpenAI Service. Microsoft’s donation of Azure infrastructure will enable the nonprofit educational organization to scale those teacher tools more widely and offer them to all K-12 teachers in the U.S. at no cost.    ..."

Hello Linkedin! This week, I officially began DCPS' New Educator Orientation and am eagerly looking forward to setting up my classroom next week. The first day of school for students is Monday, August 28th, and there's a lot of work to be done in order to get ready for the upcoming year. A few weeks ago, I posted an Amazon wishlist for my classroom, and I've been overwhelmed by the support that many of you have provided. Since then, I have received 27 separate contributions for my classroom, totaling upwards of $500. I'm incredibly appreciative of my friends, colleagues, and family members for supporting me on this teaching journey. When I entered the teaching profession, I understood that I might be overworked, underpaid, and need to spend my own money on many classroom supplies, similar to many other teachers. According to the NEA, over 90 percent of teachers use their own money to buy school supplies and other items essential for their students' success. Moreover, just before the pandemic, educators, on average, spent around $500 of their own money on classroom supplies throughout the year. With that being said, there are still a few items left on my wishlist before it's completely fulfilled, and I can kick off my first year of teaching on a strong note. I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider contributing or donating to my classroom. This is The Season For Giving! Your donation of Chromebooks will help students learn. My students need to know about computers, but because of socio-economic reasons, students cannot access computers the way other students can. Your Chromebook donation will give my students access to quality education and technology. Based on my learning and teaching experiences, computers can function as electronic workbooks, supplying teaching and instruction at an individualized pace for each student in every location in the world. On a more sophisticated level, computers can simulate real-world learning experiences for my students. Computers can also be a productivity tool, empowering my students to gather and learn from information more efficiently, synchronously, and asynchronously. My students must have ready access to computers in the classroom that require more computers, more complex technical support, and increased familiarity with the computer and software. Unfortunately, that is not the case in my classroom. My classroom has no classroom computer to help facilitate their learning. Due to this lack of technology in my classroom, my students are at a disadvantage to other students. They must have ready access to computers in the classrooms, requiring more complex technical support and increased familiarity with the computer and software. Students need the Chromebooks to help them as I work to integrate technology into the curriculum in educationally significant ways to facilitate my students' learning and prepare them to compete in a new, technological world. Despite being in the "Age of Information", not everyone has access to educational resources. This problem is especially prevalent in Arizona, which ranks 49 out of 50 states in quality of education. Prepworks EDU is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that aims to solve this problem by increasing educational equity through a multifold approach involving: 👨🏫 Providing 1-1 tutoring online 📑 Creating customized learning material 👨⚖️ Lobbying for improvements in the AZ K-12 public education system All free of cost. 🌟 Our Milestones So Far! 🌟 🎓 96% of students in our tutoring demo reported a seamless tutoring process, with 82% reporting their session as "very helpful". 📚 Partnering with 12 Arizona school districts to bring our tutoring services to their students for the upcoming 2024 - 2025 school year. 📜 Lobbying for $8 million through a policy memo that aims to increase access to education by promoting the use of digital learning tools (currently under AZ Dep Ed review process) We couldn't have achieved this without our incredible team of 15+ changemakers.
