Hello, LinkedIn. Ever since I stepped up into my current role 1.5 years ago, I’ve been writing much less. I still get to be involved with a lot of great content, mostly from my teammates Stefanie Yeo and Jonathan Chew (check out their work here: https://lnkd.in/g7N6TGFV), but it’s mostly in an editor or supervisory capacity. Nothing wrong with that - and I’m also learning and doing a lot of new and interesting things with my other responsibilities - but I have to admit that there’s a specific itch to be scratched, one that I don’t have a lot of time and energy to address nowadays. This, along with a recent conversation about creativity with Imran Khan (who hired me into Tech in Asia 5+ years ago), triggered a trip down a rabbit hole of my own writing over the last few years. This includes both stuff that I’ve done for work as well as personal write-ups, and I’ve decided I want to start sharing my favourites, once a week or so for the next year, if for no reason but to reflect and maybe learn from others’ perspectives. (Aside: I decided to start this today because it is my birthday. A completely arbitrary reason, but at least it makes for a milestone of sorts. I am 33; well wishes are welcome but unnecessary.) Ok, enough preamble. This isn't my typical "content creator tactical" post you all love so much. This one is definitely not spoken about in content creation. ✨ Manifestation Telling the universe what you want, so that it can help you obtain it. Watch the video below, and then check out how I used manifestation throughout my whole career (and haven't mentioned it until now): 1) Went to my first esports event and was exposed to the world of content creation. "I want to film content for video games"-----> Later that year got my first job in collegiate esports. Manifested ✅ 2) Saw the regionalization of the Overwatch League and its potential for creation. "I want to work for a pro team one day"-----> Got hired to direct for the Atlanta Reign Overwatch team. Manifested ✅ 3) Was being undervalued and misunderstood by that company, needed to stretch out of gamer focused content. "I want to work for a gaming company that "gets it"" ----> Got hired to produce content for SteelSeries, one of the biggest peripheral gaming brands in the world. Manifested ✅ 4) Wasn't making enough money to achieve my goals. "I want to find a company that will pay me more" ----> Got hired as a producer for a media company funded by Mark Cuban. Manifested ✅ 5) That company ran out of money and laid us all off. "I want to find a company that understands the value of content and trusts me to build it"----> Got hired by James Cribbs to run his content department Manifested ✅ No matter what you want to do in life, you need to put it out into the world. Start acting as if you're already doing what you want to be doing. When the universe is aware of your goals, it can help you achieve them. DBA is joining forces with UTA Creators. UTA Creators is the new powerhouse division at United Talent Agency that brings together four separate agency groups to better service talent, brands, and platforms within the creator economy. DBA will continue to operate as a separate management company, but will collaborate closely with the Digital Talent, Gaming and Esports, and Audio teams to leverage resources and expertise to adapt and meet the needs of increasingly multihyphenated talent. I'm a numbers guy. While we know Esports is a volatile space to work. The content creation space is even more so. Where do we look for return on investment while having the content creators working for your organization working for you as hard as you work for them? For many, it was just the org name in front of their gamer tags. Seeing the FaZe Clan / GameSquare Holdings Inc. cuts this past week, got me thinking of the method to the madness. In green, the creators that were kept. Those that were cut are in red. While these numbers can go WAY deeper in terms of engagement rates, posting cadence and reach/impressions, this is mainly surface level. From these numbers, we see the majority of the cuts happened to the creators with the smaller followings. Only 3 of those cut have over 1 million followers on X. Some of the creators under the 1 million X follower mark make up for it with a strong YouTube following, but not all of them. While I didn't pull followers from streaming platforms, evergreen produced content is where a lot of creators are lacking. Some of the cut (even retained) creators haven't posted a video on YouTube in months (some in over half a year), so I can see why cutting those creators would make sense. For being cut, Rain has impressive followership between the two platforms, but he hasn't posted a video on YouTube in 10 MONTHS!? The anomalies are the creators that were kept that had followings dwarfed by some of those that were cut. Scope, Zooma, Fakie, and Kaysan. A creator isn't just working for and representing your business, they themselves have to be a business. They aren't maximizing their exposure by just streaming and not investing in their produced content.

Launching a game is tough. Launching a game in 2023 is Dark Souls level difficult. But it doesn't need to be. You see, all the signs were there years back but many teams are still still stuck in an old fashioned mindset to both development and marketing. For the latter, there are parallels to the late 00's & early 10's where many of us in relatively junior positions railed agaisnt established seniors who diverted large sums of budget to TV & print. I still recall a very strange quarter where I had several meetings with Directors explaining Twitch to them and the entire concept of livestreaming, it was baffling seeing these absolute rockstars with such an obvious blindspot. I feel developers and marketers still have this issue but expressed from a new angle. Attention on your game is important, attention at the right time is vital. And there's the trap. The methods and timelines we use are now way off. What we look at as viral hits or instant blockbusters are often titles who, by design or accident, have hit the correct formula of time vs your vision of "ready". The questions to ask are very simple and I'll get into them at a later point. For now If you're an small - mid sized company looking to establish yourselves you *need* to build your marketing teams and to do it much earlier than I've seen happening lately, If at any point you're of the belief that you don't need them "yet" you're often already 6 months late. You need that voice much earlier especially if you secure someone with product background who takes an interest in what your capabilities are and plans around your average time to output on tasks. This is my friend Isa, she is one of the biggest Counter-Strike fans I know. She is also a streamer and content creator and one of the most professional people I have ever met in gaming 💜 Isa lives in Brazil and I have worked with her on different projects for over a year now. I asked her if she could check out TEN.gg and if she likes it share what she thinks about the site as a professional business platform for gaming and esports. The fact her favourite colour is purple helped and I was so happy to see this Tweet (or X post? 🤷♂️) and get her feedback on the platform. Working with Isa and other content creators on different projects is amazing as they are so passionate about their work and for anyone who has worked with creators will know that behind the camera, the professional ones are a joy to work with. There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to working with content creators like Isa, ones I am sure you can imagine. But if you are looking to engage with a gaming audience, especially on Twitch and X, then take the time to do your homework and find a content creator that is authentic AND professional. Working on gaming projects, especially anything Counter-Strike related (which is massive in Brazil and across Lat Am) it is awesome to collaborate with someone who knows a specific regions audience and scene so well.
