As an “appassionato” of all things Italian, I thought I would share a few thoughts about Italian design and engineering. When we think of Italy, our minds conjure up images of rolling vineyards, ancient architecture, and the rich aroma of espresso. But beyond the picturesque landscapes and culinary delights lies a legacy that has profoundly influenced the world: Italian design and engineering. #madeinitaly https://lnkd.in/gBX2Eyn4

The new Shanghai Smart Booth is the adaptive reuse of an existing free-standing phone booth. This unique urban artifact is powered by solar panels on its roof, a sophisticated design that demonstrates the infinite potential of creative thinking about the urbanscape and public realm. Equipped with a variety of new features, these technologically upgraded versions of old iconic Shanghai phone booths cater to the needs of the progressive tech-savvy population of Shanghai as much as to the safety needs of the elderly who may still remember using phone booths for their primary function. In addition to a free three-minute phone call, these new, yet traditionally red, digitalized phone kiosks offer around-the-clock Wi-Fi hotspots, 5G transceivers, wireless charging for mobile devices, as well as USB connectivity, touch screens with city maps and easy one-click taxi-hailing services. A panic button along with such artificial intelligence features as face recognition is meant to assist the elderly and tackle an alarming problem of elderly people going missing in China. https://lnkd.in/dg5cmtnd

It's validating to review all the ways I've explained #WiseCities and #digitalplacemaking over the past 13 years. This slide from a keynote in Rome at the 2015 Professional Lighting Design magazine conference inspires even more today, 11 years later. The future is not a blank slate that can be shaped however we want. The modernist ("techno-optimist", "smart city") view that we can completely remake society through rational planning and technology is no longer valid based on endless amounts of evidence. We must recognize that the future emerges from the past and present, and is constrained by existing conditions and unintended consequences we need to become more mindful about. The ongoing present has its own complex dynamics that resist being freely molded to our will. The present unfolds due to many interacting factors, not just human will and design. Though we have agency, history and deep contexts limit our ability to totally reinvent the world. Change requires engaging the future thoughtfully and responsibly, conscious of the legacies that brought us here, and being cautious of our own blind spots. Instead of unchecked hubris, we need deeper humility of our personal and planetary limits, and radically inclusive participation — wiser approaches.

# See-through bathrooms in Japan!! You can find out in Tokyo, where the Nippon Foundation has installed see-through public restrooms in some parks. These colorful glass boxes are not only eye-catching but also functional. They turn opaque when you lock the door, so you don't have to worry about privacy. They also let you check the cleanliness and availability of the toilet before entering. Does this concept make sense? #science #tech #technologyo
