Online learning providers such as Coursera have developed partnerships around performance-based admissions programs, which lessen the barriers for students from all backgrounds to participate. It’s a potential model for other programs that could help ease the entry of more tech professionals into the workforce. Coursera works with educational institutions such as Ball State University, University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), and Northeastern University to offer students an alternative pathway to enroll in online degree programs. Tech professionals who have day jobs and lack time for the admissions process can enroll in programs by just trying out a couple of courses. With tech professionals having many other options now to get training beyond four-year degrees—and roles such as web developers, system administrators and database engineers not requiring a four-year degree at all—performance-based admission programs could provide a quicker path to pursuing a college education. Online or in person? It’s a common question on the mind of those who seek to further their education with a master’s degree. Although the diploma earned may be identical, the learning experience and outcomes can be vastly different. The Institute for Advanced Analytics has achieved an unparalleled track record of success with its Master of Science in Analytics. The key is to leverage being in person to the fullest extent possible. That means engaging students everyday, all day. They hone technical and teamwork skills and develop strong, long lasting relationships with each other and the faculty in a way that is rare online. The fully integrated curriculum is 10 months long and has a 97% completion rate, with 93% employed at graduation—spanning 16 years and 1,300 graduates. A similar degree usually takes 2-3 years to complete online. Below I compare the graduation rate of a well-known Master of Science in Analytics taught in person with its online companion degree using publicly available data from a leading university. Online has its attractions—convenience, flexibility, and sometimes reduced costs—but the likelihood of graduating isn’t one of them in this case. The data show the odds of graduating in a timely way are estimated to be about 2-in-5 for the online version of the degree, compared to 9-in-10 when a student pursues the degree in residence. Same curriculum. Same professors. The only difference is the learning format. Understanding what fuels the disparate results needs closer inspection. Balancing full-time work, family, and coursework is surely a challenge for online learners. Regardless of the cause, for many students the online format isn’t their cup of tea. 2021: Applied for the Rhodes Trust Scholarship and was UNSUCCESSFUL. 2022: Gained admission into 3 top universities + 2 SCHOLARSHIPS. No, I did not take any extra courses, obtain additional certifications, or volunteer between 2021 and 2022. I just told my story better. I mean, if you saw my Rhodes Scholarship SOP, even you would not give me $1. If you want to get into that dream school or win that scholarship, your Statement of Purpose (SOP) needs to communicate, "I am the perfect candidate for this course or scholarship, with EVIDENCE." Writing a compelling SOP is simple. I just ask these 7 questions: 1. What course are you applying for? Let's say Data Science. 2. How did you develop an interest in Data Science? I dig deep with follow-up questions because the real story, not some picture-perfect story. 3. What is your long-term goal in this field? Work with top tech companies? Not sure? We figure it out together. One of the tricks I use is to look at where others who have studied this course are currently working, then we choose the one that seems most exciting. 4. What have you done so far to nurture your interest? Online courses? Tech workshops? We talk specifics, no cliches. 5. What is missing? For example, we could look at job advertisements for that dream role. What is the gap between points 3 and 4? That’s the knowledge or experience gap. 6. How will this MSc course help you fill that gap? We check the course description on the university’s website, and we match the description with the gaps we've identified. That is the "why." 7. What are the unique things about that university of interest? Do they have a Nigerian society? Is there a lecturer with the same academic background as you? Is there a Nigerian alumnus from that university whose story inspires you? and so on. Boom, SOP is personalized. Now, I rearrange the answers using my 7-part SOP writing framework (check comment for post link). And there you have it, a clear, straightforward, and convincing 4-5 paragraph Statement of Purpose. For scholarships, of course I ask some additional questions because your goals and values need to align with those of the scholarship. If not, just forget about it.
