Incident to billing is a billing practice in which a nonphysician healthcare provider, such as a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or clinical nurse specialist, performs a service, and that service is billed under the supervising physician's name. This means that the physician does not have to be physically present during the service but must be actively involved in the patient's care and available for consultation Importance: 1.Reimbursement: When services are billed incident to a physician, they are often reimbursed at a higher rate compared to services billed under the non-physician provider's name. This can lead to increased revenue for the healthcare practice. 2. Patient Access: Utilizing non-physician providers allows for greater patient access to care, especially in underserved areas. It enables healthcare practices to efficiently provide services and meet the demands of a growing patient population. 3. Streamlining Care: Incident to billing can help streamline the delivery of care. Non-physician providers can handle routine and follow-up visits, allowing physicians to focus on more complex cases, ultimately improving overall patient care. Our collective efforts help us to provide the best possible care for our patients and improve their overall well-being. 👩⚕️ Nurses play a crucial role in coordinating with doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers to create a patient-centered approach to care. By working as a team, we can leverage our individual expertise and skills to develop comprehensive care plans that address the physical, emotional, and social needs of our patients. 💡 Collaborating with the healthcare team allows us to share insights, knowledge, and perspectives that ultimately enhance the quality of care our patients receive. Overburden Many healthcare workers (physicians, providers, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, phlebotomists, imaging techs, pharmacy techs, environmental services, etc.) are experiencing overburden. An online dictionary defined overburden as: to make someone or something work too hard or carry, contain, or deal with too much. Are we asking people to work too hard or carry too much? Here’s an example of a primary care provider’s typical day: After seeing a full schedule of patients from 8 - 5 (he got lunch today, some days he eats at his desk), he spends 2 - 3 hours at home answering messages, reviewing labs and imaging reports, and other “indirect” work. He and his medical assistant have been together for 6 years and are a high functioning team. He is proud that together, they are caught up on their indirect care delivery for his large panel of patients. Adding to his burden is the concern that because he is caught up, the health system will move his medical assistant to help his colleagues - some of whom are several weeks behind on their indirect patient care. Breaking his effective and collaborative partnership will bury him in a backlog of tasks. Overburdening this provider and many other healthcare workers is creating burnout. Let’s do better. Where do you think we can start to reduce overburden?
