I am pleased to share an insightful new blog post discussing the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to monitor Critical Infrastructure Facilities (CIFs) during natural disasters. The post explores how LLMs can analyze social media data to identify impacts to CIFs and their operational status. The authors conducted extensive experimentation and reported the results using standard evaluation metrics, shedding light on both the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs in this context. 🔬 👁️🗨️ Interpretability research is breaking the AI blackbox and exposing concepts and their ability to be individually selected and manipulated. Awesome work Anthropic ! At Carnegie Mellon University I had the opportunity to study with Professor Anupam Datta - Fairness and security of Deep Learning. In this class we reproduced a few papers including : Man is to Computer Programmer as Woman is to Homemaker? Debiasing Word Embeddings ( link in comments ) This research identified gender bias in a common technique used in AI and developped the tools to manipulate and minimize this bias in the data and the resulting AI applications. For example, CV selection systems using this technique would choose male candidates with similar percentages to the ones in their training data even when gender was not explicitly stated. Debiasing would yield a CV selector more capable of choosing candidates based on relevant experience and skills rather than irrelevant demographics. This type of work is critical in enabling us to understand AI's strengths and weaknesses and get the most value out of these systems in safe and ethical ways. Onwards and upwards.
